I went to true value and asked for #8 hardware cloth and they had no idea of what I was talking about. What exactly is #8 hardware cloth? I sure would like to get it before I hive the bees.

I think you'll have better luck finding it in a craft store.

It is sometimes called hardware mesh. It comes in 1/4 inch or #4 quite commonly, and I'm pretty sure you could find the 1/4 inch in the store. #8 is a bit more rare, and is 1/8 inch. It means that there are 8 wires to each inch of mesh.
I've never found #8 on the shelf, but I've got it by asking for it at the area where they cut glass and screens and such.
This page has photos of what it looks like. http://www.twpinc.com/twpinc/control/category?category_id=TWPCAT_4&VIEW_SIZE=10&VIEW_INDEX=3 (http://www.twpinc.com/twpinc/control/category?category_id=TWPCAT_4&VIEW_SIZE=10&VIEW_INDEX=3)

I wanted the Galvanized Hardware Cloth.. ie, the metal type for the screen bottom boards I was making.
It arrive today just in time for me to finish my 2nd hive stand. It's a good quality and sturdy metal and perfect for the SBB.
