Is anyone using software to keep up with their hives? Any recommendations?
-
I use Hivenotes by Apimo. It's a freeware program that meets most of my immediate needs. It has the ability to sync with a Palm device, but unfortunately, my PDA runs on MS Pocket PC2002. So I scribble my notes in the field on paper and transfer to the computer later. And I haven't yet figured out a way to print a hard copy of my entries, which I especially don't like. But it is free.
There was another commercial program I downloaded a while ago, but I couldn't make sense of the trial version, so I deleted it after a while. I haven't been able to find any other programs out there.
MS Excel is good for keeping track of honey yields catagorized by hive numbers, dates, etc., and displaying them in easily readable charts.

I thought about Excel or maybe even an Access database but even that really wont do what I want. I will check out the one you are using and see how it works...
Thanks.. Its hard for us IT people to not have a program for everything...even a hobby we do to get away from IT..
-
If you build it . . . they will buy it. (Hopefully!)

Ewww.
It only runs on windoze operating systems. How bout something for us Unix guys.
Sincerely,
Brendhan

Unix is like Elves in Middle Earth, nearly extinct. (LOL) I am making up my own system using Exel That way it fits my needs.

Wow...everyone is more high-tech than me. I'm still using black and white compossition note-books for each of my hives. I guess that's pretty bad, I should be ahead on the ball given, I am in what they call the "internet generation".
-
Maybe I can use Mambo (http://www.mamboserver.com/).
I will have to look futher into this.
Sincerely,
Brendhan

If it makes you feel better Understudy, I could use open office on my Linux box....

I have openoffice here also and I though about using their spread sheet also but I if I am going to create a real db I am not going to use excel or the spreadsheet in OO.org.

mysql?

Actually, I have been looking at http://www.chrixon.com/BeeFiles/hobby.htm but they do not have their demo ready yet...
-
Sorry if this is not relevant, but has anyone tried http://www.mybeehives.com/ ?
Might be a bit basic for what you guys are looking for, but useful for a newbee :D

How do you get propolis off of the keyboard of your notebook? ;)
-
MB, Try Alcohol. I could say at this point take one shot and cuss. The alcohol lifts propolis as good or better than anything else I've tried but that is subjective. Getting it under the keys makes for interesting typing--and key removal.

Well, that's why I wasn't too upset that the program wouldn't sync with my PDA. :D But it does scrape right off my cell phone.

I like the mybeehives.com . That seems pretty nice.
Propilis on the keyboard? When did your bees start sending email. My bees can only run nmap.
Sincerely,
Brendhan

Actually I think they were sending bee-mail.

wow... since I just use the particular placement of bricks on the top covers to indicate hive condition, I guess I'm still in the stone age
-
or maybe the brick age....
Seriously though, my apiary is growing and I think I should be making notes or something...
-
And thats how you get propolis on the keys, taking your laptop to the bee yard and making your entries as you go.

I guess I don't understand how alcohol INSIDE YOU can get the propolis off the keyboard....I must be a bit denser than the propolis.....
:)

Admiral d
you keep adding alcohol till you just don't care about the propolis anymore. I believe thats how the theory goes.
-
Is this alcohol mead by any chance? :D
-
Mead is not needed and appling a little rubbing alsohol to the keys will unglue the propolis. BTW, I worse than a tea totaler sense I don't even drink tea.
