Since I was off to a late start and this is my first year beekeeping I'm still buying honey. The last I bought was $8 for a pint (pound). If I had offered it I believe they would have probably taken more  :-P

GSF,
Was it a pint, or a pound?  This always gets confused with Honey, which is sold be weight, and not volume.  A pound of honey (16 oz.) typically is 12 fluid ounces, not a pint (16 fluid ounces)

I sold mine this year for $7 for a pound container, and $18 for a three pound container...Both in skep style plastic bottles with flip tops.

I think I was more expensive than most in my area. However, no one complained and I'm very close to being sold out of everything I had.  :-D

<Was it a pint, or a pound?>

Hey Moots, I thought they were the same. So my uneducated guess would be a pint (with comb).

Is it the price in bulk beetween beekeepers or the price to the final customer?

I sell mine in the one pound honey bottle for $8.00/lb. No complaints at all. I also have the occasional customer that insists on paying $10.

most of the local honey i saw between georgia and alabama went for $14.00 a quart or more.  i would think one pound jars should bring $8.00 retail around here.  in 1980 it seems like i sold a quart for $4.00 and in 2000 i was getting $7.00.  inflation is an amazing thing.

I have seen honey sell for as much as $20.00 a pound for untreated honey in Boston, Massachusetts. I sell my honey out the back door for $12.00 a pound and have no trouble getting rid of all of it by February most times.

Moots......

You may not realize is but under Federal law in USA the honey label is supposed to have the weight in pounds and/or oz. and grams nothing to do with volume.  And there are several more requirements by Federal law in USA.

jim, that's amazing.  there are still a lot of small to "light commercial" beekeepers down this way so i don't think the market will bear that kind of price (yet).

Jim,
I do realize it!  That's the very point I was making...Honey is sold by weight, NOT Volume.  I was merely referencing volume for comparison sake to illustrate the differences and help point out how the issue sometimes gets confused.

Apparently, I didn't do a very good job.

Around here, I see local honey selling for between $8 and $8.50 per pound to the costumer. IT really isn't surprising to see that our northern friends can get more for their honey. The cost of living tends to be quite a bit higher up there. Things cost more.

Could we maybe sort out the apples and oranges?

Honey is SOLD by Weight, yet I suspect most retail consumers buy by volume. They see a jar this big and it costs this much.

As a home canner, I delight in buying products in REAL canning jars. Thus should I ever get to that point in time to actually sell honey, I would likely use canning jars. Which come in pints, quarts and half pints. (Plus a few other odd and not easily found sizes).

So a Pint jar filled to the threads would contain....How much honey weight wise? Ditto with quarts and the half pints. I wouldn't think that honey would vary that much in weight in those small volumes. Or are we measuring with a micrometer and cutting with an ax?

Good question. Im a new guy buy plan on selling by the pint and quart.....
The jars I see in my stores appear to be pints going for 7.99 plus tax with comb 6.00 without, but you figure the store is only paying about 4 to 5 buck a quart. Probaly less without the comb.

Ok,
I'll try to lend some prospective...

My one pound containers that hold 16 ounces of honey by weight, are 12 ounces by volume, or 3/4 of a pint if you prefer.

My three pound containers that hold 48 ounces of honey by weight, are 32 ounces by volume, or 1 quart.

While I don't sell a 1 1/2 pound container, 24 ounces by weight, my understanding is that fits in a pint container (16 ounces by volume). Which fits with what Vance does and the details given where I buy my containers. LINK to sailor plastics! (http://www.sailorplastics.com/Honey-Containers_c_7-2-3.html)

Lets try to do it this way.
One gallon of honey weighs 12#
four quarts = one gallon
one guart weighs 3#
two pints = one quart
one pint weighs 1 1/2 #

I sell a quart for $16
A pint for $8
A one pound plastic bottle for $6
And I have sold 1,200# since July and I'm about out. So I have increased hives and going to raise prices next year. :) If all goes well.

That's exactly what I was trying to say...Thanks for saying it a lot more straight forward.

As I said, I sell my pounds for $7, and my quarts for $18, I'm toying with the idea of adding pints next year, if so, I'll probably sell them for $10.

Sterling: 1,200 # dang. Don't think my 6 hives will get me that much honey LOL.
But just for the fun of it how many hives does it take to get 1200 # of honey?

I sold some last year for $5 a pound, (first year to sale any) looks like I need to bump it up a little.

In my area average  is about 60# and that is what I got this year. Just a little over 1200# with twenty hives. Last year I averaged 73# with fifteen hives. I would like to have twenty five production hives plus a few nucs and backup hives to split. That's about all I have time to deal with.

I also need to buy some honey if anybody local has some for sale in gallon containers.

I used to sell them for $5 in '06 up to '10.  I bumped it to $6 until '13 when increased again to $7 a pound retail.  1/4 was wholesale but I still sold out.  Harvested just over a ton in '13.  Just built another 5 hives and I'll be heading up to $8 for '14.

I didn't sell any this year, last year I got 6 for a pint, 12 for a quart, 8 for a pint with comb.  When you sell your honey on your label you can have more honey the the label says but not less honey than indicated.  My label has 1.44 lbs for a pint and 2.88 for a quart.  I do not weight each bottle.  Good luck to you and your bees and may yuall make lots of honey.

As a relative newbee (3 years) and hobbyist, it seems to me that many beekeepers are reluctant to charge what the honey is worth -- my wife always replies when people ask that it is expensive but a bargain compared to my time and expenses.
My honey is local, without beekeeper pesticides, not heated by me above 95 degrees, strained enough to get bee parts out--and tastes really good!
I think it is worth $10 a pound or more--retail grocery store honey runs $4-6 per pound and is often a different product.

I'm here in Central Arkansas and sell honey in Quart Mason Jars and put 3 pounds on the label.
I sold everything I had at $14.00 a quart.
I had one health food store tell me that if I had a hundred quarts they'd buy them.
I said guess what, I ain't got no more.

I was able to sell my meager harvest of 100 lbs. (Not including my private stash  ;) ) in 2 weeks at $12.00 lb. in 1 lb muth jars.  I charged a little more because of the jars.  People couldn't get enough of them.  I highly recommend them as a way to dress up your product and thus charge a little more!  I live in a little spa town that gets a lot of high rolling visitors from the DC/Baltimore area.  Once I get my production up to speed, and start working our farmers market, I could probably get a little more! LOL

Another way to increase your profits is to use fun and decorative lids on honey jars.

Thease cost about 15 cents extra and I sell the jars for 1 dollar over the normal jars with a plane gold lid.

40% of my customers choose the decorative lids.

Originally I was going to use them as gift jars at Christmas.

As usual I had left jarring honey to the last minute and the night beefore I was going to a farmers market I started filling jars       and I couldn't find the normal gold lids

What to do  :? I angrily took the picture ones swearing under my breath the whole time, well, if I have to use the expensive lids the price has to go UP!

No one complained, the Ladies like the pink flowery ones that I hadn't bought many of, so don't only buy the ones you Think are nice, even the girlie ones sell well.  :rainbowflower:

Usually I share and tell my other colleagues good ideas how to improve sales, but locally I'm keeping quiet so I can have something unique that no one else has caught on to yet.

It's a great way to make more Money, happy customers with no effort  :-D

It's about marketing sometimes.  I've put out some feelers to find some of those lids here.  I did find the honeycomb design with a supplier out of Minnesota.  It's the 6117 honeycomb design in the 63mm I regularly use.  I prefer many of the others but it's still nicer that what I currently use.  It looks more specialized and professional.  What does "82er, 66er, or 43er" mean?  Is it the diameter of the lid, 82mm,66mm,43mm etc.?

I would LOVE to find some of those lids!   I tried to find the translate button on that website but no luck.

Sadly they don't have one  :-X

But if you google   (Google Translate) you will come to the translater page

Chose German to English, take the Webb address http://www.holtermann-shop.de/ (http://www.holtermann-shop.de/)     and lift - copy it into the German box in the translator  it should come up in the English translated box , double click on the address in the English box and it should take you to the site translated into English.

Some times it doesn't work and then you may have to click on a mesage under the two boxes and then you come to the site in English.

Tell me if you get it to work or not , so I know if I explained it right

The translater doesn't work 100% but it makes it a lot easier and you can guess the rest  :-D

Nice job Edward, thanks!  Those Canadian ones are at least in the same continent as me!  Heck, I'll even be near Ottawa, ON as well as St-Pie, QC in the start of February.  I've shipped tons of stuff to Canada (different industry) but ironically never had anything sent from Canada.  I found 100 honeycomb printed lids in Minnesota that I bought but they were on close out.  The lids were from another supplier they bought out so they had no contacts for how to get more.

I'd also found a UK one http://www.freemanharding.co.uk/category.php?id_category=97&p=2 (http://www.freemanharding.co.uk/category.php?id_category=97&p=2) that had some offerings as well.  Correct me if I am wrong but Europe uses a lot of glass in there honey packaging?  From the displays I saw squeezable bears and bottles were the exception, not the norm.

I'll hit the Guelph location to review if they ship into the US.

In Sweden the norm is creamed honey in 700grams or 500grams glass jars.

Selling runny honey is frowend upon, heated honey is like swearing in Church   according to old conservative beekeepers.

My first honey I sold was in the plastic bears that I remember from my youth  :-D

Then I sold most of it in 350gr jars, as I didn't have a large harvest.

Now I try to mostly sell the 700gr jars. It means more money in my pocket.

As runny honey it becoming more common due to people traveling and cooking programs I also sell it but tell the customers if it has been heated.

The small jars sell mostly to people that want a present to give away instead of flowers..

I also sell 100gr pollen for 15.50usd 0.22 Pounds (lb)

My honey prices

700gr 14usd picture lid         1.54 Pounds (lb)
700gr 13usd                        1.54 Pounds (lb)
500gr 11usd picture lid         1.10 Pounds (lb)
500gr 10usd                        1.10 Pounds (lb)
500gr 11usd 6sided jar         1.10 Pounds (lb)
350gr  8.50usd                     0.77  Pounds (lb)
335gr  7.75usd plastic drop    0.73 Pounds (lb)
335gr  8.50usd bear              0.73 Pounds (lb)
335gr  9.25usd bear new extracted 0.73 Pounds (lb)
250gr 6.25usd 6sided jar      0.55 Pounds (lb)
125gr 4.75usd 6sided jar      0.27 Pounds (lb)

I don't know anyone that sells honey in bottels.
In germany + norway they sell honey in tin cans, also in norway they sell it in small aluminum packages

Three beekeepers I know of in my area sell honey. One, the largest, sells it at $4/lb to stores, markets, etc. (larger orders) and $5/lb. for small (personal use) orders. Another sells honey at $6/lb. And another sells his honey at $15/lb claiming it's of superior quality and purely local, no sugar water added, treatment-free bees, etc.

I don't sell (or extract) honey yet but if I do it'll be $5-6/lb and $45 for a gallon (12 lbs.; would come out to $3.75 a pound).

If you update your location in your profile, it will display it to the left with all your post and not show you as "hopelessly lost"....Location is extremely important in beekeeping, affecting everything from honey prices to beekeeping techniques and advice.  :)

Also, depending where you are at, I think your per pound price sounds low...don't sell your or your bees hard work short.  :)

Thanks. I updated that now. I'm near Sacramento, CA.

I guess I could sell it for more but it would probably take longer (depending on how many hives I can extract from, how much I can get; I have 40 right now). Maybe if I emphasize on quality people would buy more at a higher price but if not they'll choose some cheaper option that isn't too cheap.

I sell here in central KY at $10/lb. in plastic squeeze bottles and $12/lb. in muth jars. Many here are way cheaper but I still sell out every year. I may not sell it as fast as they do but never have honey left by the time extraction time comes around again. If I take the time to dress up the muth jars with a ribbon and a Christmassy hang tag I can get as much as $15/lb.

Those are some awesome lids, and they've got the 63mm bee on the Aster.  I hit them to see if they ship direct to the US.

I did some preliminary math and assuming purchasing 100 from the German company it was 14 € with 7,40 € in shipping.  That's $.30 per lid before shipping to the US.  Assuming $30 for international shipping we're pushing $.60 per lid.  Currently the standard lids cost $.20 in the US.  Not a deal killer but put the hassle factor in there and it tips to the no-go side if they can't ship to the US.  I'm not giving up though.

I bought out the 100+ of the 63mm printed comb lids I found domestically, but that source is now dry. I'm heading to Canada in a few weeks (non-beekeeping business) where I'll check out another source during down time.

I'm all about fairness. ;)  I did find hex glass for less than 2/3rds of what I was paying while searching this subject (even a blind squirrel finds a nut!) so I'm already ahead even at a buck per lid.  The other concern is if the lid will fit depth and lug wise.  US and EU glass producers don't appear to have an agreed upon standard.  The lids in Canada are the same ones offering in Europe.  It's a risk I'll take when offered.  I'll take a sample jar to Canada to try in a couple weeks.

Pint size jar- 22oz
Qt size jar- 44oz

Of course weights will actually vary from year to year depending on moisture etc. Also from region to region. The weights above came from a chart that used to be in a table in the inside of one of the bee suppliers catalogs.

I get $8 a standard pt mason jar and really need to go up.

around here ( st. Louis ) the average is:
$7-10.00 per pint
$12-16.00 per qt.
$40-60 per gal.
$180.00 per 5 gal.
the jar prices increased slightly the last few years. the big jump was with 1 & 5 gal. prices. 4 years ago 5 gal. ranged between $75-120.00 & 1 gal could be had for $20-30.00

Jay,
The reason behind adding a general location is so it does not need to be asked over and over. beekeeping in Florida is very different in some respects than in Pennsylvania. Sometimes a better answer can be given by knowing where a member is from.
If you look below your name where you post you will see peoples location ,if it says "Hopelessly Lost" it is because a member did not add their location. This is a default of the forum software. Many times people just do not realize they did not add it.
It is not "flippant" remark asking them to add their location.

The phrase is not meant to be a slam just a play on the words listed in the location when you do not add it.  Dang that's a good start  :?  Maybe just simply lost would be a better fit  :-D Or a simple chill with a  :)

There is no such thing as "organic honey"......you cant control where your bees forage.

Well, if everything is organic for miles in every direction beyond the range of a forager, then I guess you could label it organic. Around here, that would be a very rare location to have.

A friend of mine went to Gatlinburg, Tn to visit his mom. He said that the honey up there was going for $15 a pint - not a quart. He said he was told it was because everyone up there used honey in their coffee. I didn't ask but I bet he got it at a tourist trap, probably had a Smokey Mountain Honey on it, or something to that effect. I'm still experimenting with the honey in the coffee thing.

The three things my honey customers say they use honey for the most is peanutbutter, oatmeal and coffee.
They probably sell that mountain honey as sourwood honey. Probably really comes from China.

i haven't ever liked it in coffee but it's good in iced tea.  try a couple of drops on some sharp cheddar cheese some time.

saw some at the feed and seed for $11.50 a pint yesterday.

I'm very VERY new to honey but did sell 1 gallon yesterday. I had already spent the time to put it up in 1/2 and full pint jars but was happy to save my glass ware and dump it into their containers. Liz uses honey in just about everything she used to use sugar in. I sold the honey for 60 bucks and they said they would be ready for another gallon in about a month or so. I guess I'd better get the wip out and get the girls going! LOL  :-D

It is all about the packaging and the marketing. If you don't believe it look here: Check out the different honeys for different uses :)

And yes Gatlinburg would be a high end fu-fuuuuu market. The roadside stands here got 13 and 14 a pint in a rural farm area. I guy near a retiremenet high end community I knwo gets $16 pt. Wish I could be so lucky.

All honey tastes great  ;)

But if you can sell a honey jar with a story that brings a small tear of joy to the customer you can name your price.

They are paying - buying  an idea not just a jar of honey.

i make a living in sales and i'll be the first to tell you that any given day there will always be somebody willing to sell product cheaper,  there is a service factor involved, though.  in the end, all my competition has the same product as me and they buy it at close to the same price.  i sell building materials but i'm really in the shipping/coordinating business because that's what makes me stand out.  a fancy package and a cute story is a gimmick, not a service.  if someone is willing to pay more for it that's there business.  i'm more interested in a different niche.

I have a big barrel of honey.

I fill a fancy jar with honey from the barrel and top it off with a gold lid and a nice label.

I fill an old scratched jar with a dented tarnished lid from the same barrel.

Same honey different package .

Which one will sell, and get a better price? Which one will taste better?

Its all in the mind

edward even in my day job it's all about perception.  some of my competitors are as good or better than me but my clients feel like i'm doing the best for them.  it's more or less the same.
sc, if you can't find them you can make pretty round labels that will stick to the regular old lid.

Bullseye.  I used to think I couldn't get the premium price when I first started.  Then I ran into Savannah Honey.  $22 for a piece of comb honey, $12 for a pound of liquid honey.  I want that.  All they are selling is honey, just like what we offer but in unique packaging.  I decided to focus on professional labeling, packaging, and unique, premium products.  It's the little things (like lids) that help your product stand out.  I bumped my retail prices 20% and sold out of 2K pounds in 5 months.  Almost quadrupled my gross sales.  My GM% went from 8 to 51%.  I'll probably bump my list prices another 10-20% this year so I don't sell out in 5 months and offer even more premium products.  If you want more $ for your honey, you've got to figure out how to get it.  It's not easy, but that's why not everyone gets it.

so I don't sell out in 5 months

This is an big indicator of if you are selling you honey under the price you can get for it.

If you run out many months beefore the next harvest you most likely need to see over the price you are selling your honey.

If you don't think your honey should cost more buy a notebook and record everything you do under a year connected to bees, hives, honey, gas, driving, beekeeping clubs activities, beekeeping courses, hive, box, frame, building bee purchase, new queens and selling the honey.
Don't forget the notebook and pen  ;)

After you take all this into account no one will bee able to afford to buy your honey if you charge minimum wage for your efforts.

Edward,
As I think I mentioned before, I sell my 1 1b. for $7 and my 3 lb. for $18....which is more than most charge is this area, but I felt it was worth it.  I'm sold out and didn't have anyone blink at the price I was charging.  But your story makes a good point...I have a friend/co-worker who likes to give me a bad time (just joking of course) about charging him retail for my honey.  The other day he told me he thought I should sell it to him at cost...I told him that if I charged hiim cost, it would cost him a lot more than $7 a pound.

If you run out early you can Always import some locally produced honey to sell

Do they make local honey in china?

Or is your locally produced honey a special and rare thing that cant bee bought at the bargin basement big grocery store at a ridiculously low price?

Its like apples and oranges, both a fruits, but they are not the same product.
