Is blackberry any good for honey?
« on: November 19, 2013, 01:32:54 am »
I'm looking after a couple of hives on a block of weedy industrial land. We had some cherry blossom at the end of August/early September and then almost nothing but grass till now. There is a small amount of what I think is St Johns Wort that seems to have slightly improved the honey flow, but my great hope is the huge amount of Blackberry on site.

My question is how good a producer is Blackberry and how's the taste?. Will it be enough to produce honey? The only mentions I could find online were from the U.S.A. and I wasn't sure if ours are the same species

Depends on how much there is, but yes blackberry is very good, makes very good honey, your bees will do well on it. My main spring flow is blackberry but  there is lots of it around and it lasts for a couple of weeks.

Just remember that your bees will forage in a radius of about 3-5km.
