Title: Cost of bees in your area?
Post by: Horns Pure Honey on March 07, 2005, 07:35:53 pm
In my area, Illinois, it is costing me $68.00 for a 3 pound nuc of bees. Is this the average cost of bees across the nation, I have never really checked. This year I am getting 2 nucs for shure and getting 8 hives for free. Dont really plan to go any higher even though I want to. bye :D

I can't remember for sure, but I THINK the 2 pounds of bees I bought 2 years ago was about $48. There was no shipping because I had my father-in-law pick them up for me.

Local 5 frame nucs are selling for $53.00 here In Michigan.
Lapps of Wisconsin prices in the 2005 catalog are 2LB. package $44.00 till you buy 100 then reduce price by a dollar. 3 lb packages are $53.00 no reduction for buying quanity. Five frame nucs are $65.00 to bee picked up May 1st.
All above packages and nucs except the Michigan ones are to bee picked up at Reeseville Wisconsin only.
Kare and I got seven 2 deeps colonies complete for $50.00 each from the retireing beekeeper.

I assume you meant 3lb package, since nucs are sold by frame and package are sold by pounds.

Spell Bee
2lb packages $39
3lb packages $48

There are no bees in my area that I know of.  The closest place is an hour and a half away, and it was cheaper to pay for shipping then gas.  I honestly can't remember what I paid, somewhere in the $50-$60 range (and that's for 3# packages).

It would probably cost me less to have them mailed, too, but I'm going to drive to Michigan first, visit with relatives, and then down to Ohio to pick up the bees. I figure I'll make a road trip out of it, and get to see a big apiary at the same time.

Hey Lesli,

What apiary in Ohio are you going to visit?  I've been thinking about heading over to Ohio to see my folks and maybe make a stop in Wooster to see the bee museum at the Ohio Ag Research center:

My trip to the Beelab/Museum was a dud - no one there. I had e-mailed ahead of time, but didn't get a response until AFTER I had got home.  Oh well, maybe next time.  Here what they sent me:

Dear Mark:

The bee museum has no regular days or hours that it is open.  When someone is interested in touring the museum, they usually coordinate a day and time with us.  There is no admission charge at this time.

Sincerely,
Sherry
