A For Effort---July 6, 2009
« on: July 06, 2009, 10:43:38 pm »
This lil colony was doing its best but was most likely a late swarm that had poor resources. They had no honey reserves.

I set them up in a medium with drawn comb and a full frame of honey. I will keep them fed and happy and we will see how they do.

Forgive the blurriness of some of the pics, I believe my camera is on its last leg.

I gave them a full frame of honey with 7 drawn combs that had a little honey on them from my last extraction.

I will keep an eye on them and continue feeding til they are strong.

I can't believe you were able to get a picture of the queen just walking along the top of the frames, mine never do that or at least when I am looking.
Great pictures. I am sure you will do well with this colony, you have the touch. :)

Natalie, this queen decided she wanted to pose for pictures, they normally run down in a split second between the frames once released from the hairclip catcher.

Irwin, not to worry, I will get another one, when I know this one's end is near, which I think is getting closer than I realize.

Leave it to JP to take a camera on it's last legs and still take better pictures than NatGeo!  :-D

I would rather take a look at JP's pictures on here than watch satellite tv! Well, in most cases I would.... ;)

That is a pretty cute little colony ya got there....was it under a deck or something?

Brenda, you are much too kind, all I do is point and shoot. They were in the deck of a playset.

This is probaby a dumb question for most folks here but how/can a person feed extracted honey back to a hive? I have some honey that taste fine I just don't like the color due to air getting in extractor making it white in color. My plans at this time is to start some nuc boxes next month with new queens to over winter. How would one go about feeding fresh extracted honey to a new nuc?
Thanks in advance for constructed answers.

Glad the hive is in your care now cause they will build up great now.

Off topic a moment, JP my little umbrella swarm is building up so, so great.  They are already filling 2 medium supers and the whole bottom super is capped brood, they are going to explode in population soon. I saw the queen also and she looked good and plump.

They are a bit low on stores, so I will start to feed them a bit starting next week.

Diluted with water? I use quart paint cans with small holes in lid ,of course turned upside down. We are in a terrible derth and dry spell here.

If you add water they will have to work harder to cap it.Are you getting ready for winter or feeding for them to build comb ?

I may have good news for you, the haze halo around light sources indicates you may simply need to clean your lens to improve clarity.  I've seen this before on my cameras.

Jimmy, I would put the honey in a feeder on the hive, they will make good use of it.

Grandma, I wish it was that simple, I'm not saying the lens doesn't need cleaning but the camera is making weird noises when I turn it on as the lens sections pop out.

Annette, very happy to hear the umbrella colony is doing well!

well, I wish the diminutive colony the best.  I am sure that they are in good hands.
