In a SHAMELESS effort to up my post count, here's a log cut-out we did last Saturday.

Had an internet friend that I'd conversed with for several years. I posted about the cut-outs I was doing for the DOT. She contacted me and told me that she had had a log with bees for a year or two, but didn't quite know what to do about it. I drove up to her place, looked it over, and gave her 3 options about what she could do. She decided on a cut-out.

So....this is what we did last Saturday!

The nest exposed...brood chamber was on the upper left, and honey to the upper right and center.

Capped brood. Not very impressive, but this was an old, old hive. I found a LOT of black unusable wax in the brood chamber. We'll see how the queen does in a new condo.

The homeowner/beek had plastic frames and foundation, so I brought up some wooden frames and fitted the brood comb in them. We only got 6 frames of brood.


We found her majesty:

Putting the brood together with the vacuumed bees. The temperatures were in the high 90's, so we put on a screened top.

Two days after, I get a frantic call. The bees are trying to abscond! The bees crawled out on the ground. I had the homeowner put another deep super over the top of the mound of bees, and they went in. She had lemongrass oil, and sprayed it with sugar water. It turns out that she had stored the original supers in scented plastic trash bags in her hot garage. I'm thinking out-gassing was the problem.

The bees are pulling wax in the new deep, and it now looks like they'll stay. They sound busy and happy.

I've done 4 in the last 3 weeks. Now I'm putting them off til Spring.

Gotta paint a house, 2 barns, and a garage in the next month, plus put in a new water line.

I keep busy.
