What it does it hinders yield coming in.

yea you nailed me... my love of data and curiosity totally outweighs my love of honey...

That said, I've maximized the number of gates at twenty-two and I have a pretty small hive right now.. (two deeps and a super)..  I don't think it necessarily is so different then any number of natural conditions where a hive might be in a tree and the entrance is a 1" woodpecker hole...
