Title: Hello from Thurmont, Maryland
Post by: kensfarm on June 16, 2006, 11:46:40 am
Hello from Thurmont, Maryland..  I live on a farm in the valley of the Catoctin Mountains..  it's not too far from the President's retreat.. Camp David.  I see the President's helicoptors flying by all the time..  I wave.. but they've never stopped by to say hi.

I def. a newbie to beekeeping..  started w/ 2 5-frame nucs in the beginning of May bought locally from Kirsten & Micheal Traynor.  The queens are Minnesota Hygienic.  I'm using Med. Supers for the entire hives..  IPM bottom boards's & ventilated inner covers.

Just bought more equipment for 2 more hives.. have talked w/ a very local beekeeper about buying 2 more nucs.  My original nuc suppliers have left for Germany to study Apairy methods there for a year.

The bees are doing great..  I'm adding my 4th Med. Super to the hives this weekend.  I've enjoyed reading all the posts.. and have tried some of the suggestions/advice on bearding already.  My bearding was a combo of ventilation and overcrowding.. these ladies are working fast..  the locust tree's were in bloom for almost 2 weeks.  Mmmm.. just love that smell.

Sounds like you suffer from a rapid learning curve.  Welcome and visit often as even us old time beekeepers learn new things here from time to time.

Thank you for the warm welcomes..  I've been reading a lot.. doing my best to digest all the information.  Some things you just have to experience first hand.. like the weight of a full Med. Super!  I'm use to farm work.. 50lb & 100lb feed bags.. but I think a full hive body would do a number on my back.  Thanks again..  I'm looking forward to reading all the stories & info. everyone shares.

Here's how to not work so hard.

Here's how to convert what you already have to lighter equipment.

I'm really enjoying my eight frame mediums.

Hello from Dillsburg, PA - not too far up Rt. 15 from you.  I'm also new to beekeeping, with one hive and one summer under my belt.  I'm going to add two hives next year, both 8 framers using medium supers.  That advice from Michael Bush of Bush Bees was great.  I love his website with info. for "lazy beekeepers".
Enjoy the mild weather while it lasts.
