They are doing well.   Thrown 4 swarms (that I know of) so far.  They may start pack in some honey in a few weeks.

Hey Allen.  When do you suppose the poplars will start to bloom around here?

I am not Allen but the ones around Douglasville and Hiram are starting to bloom now. Saw some bloom alone Hiram Sudie Rd. Just checked the one at my back deck and it is blooming. :)

What were you doing on Hiram Sudie (my neck of the woods)?   I have been waiting for the poplars to open.   The locust is in full bloom right now I know.  Check your boxes this week and have extras ready.  They can fill a honey super this week.

I work for Frito Lay and deliver chips to Food Depot at 61.

So you are saying I need to go ahead and add a super to my pkg?

You will not get any honey to spare from a package on new frames the first year.

I'm not looking for honey. Just don't want them to run out of room in the one brood box I have on now and don't want to add a box too soon and demoralize them either. Trying to decide when to add the next brood box. I know if they run out of room they will swarm even though they are weak.

I know it has only been 10 days since I hived them but they are moving super fast to me. On Saturday, that was only day 7, they had partially drawn on 6 of the 8 frames. If I had to guess, I would say they had drawn about half to 2/3's the box already.

I plan on adding the next box on Saturday this week and removing the feeder.

Hope its the right thing to do.

You have no new bees in 10 days and your numbers are still decreasing. Don't rush to super as you will lose heat in tyhe brood chamber making it harder to keep the  brood warmOnce new brood starts emerging, then keep your eyes on it.

Thanks Ken,

Just afraid with all the pollen and nectar coming in they might run out of room for the queen to lay and swarm. They are only in one 8 frame medium brood box now. Not a lot of room.

At 10 days they probably haven't even drawn out 1/2 of the frames much less filled them up - no need to worry about them running out of room at this point.  Did you start out with them in a deep?  If so in a couple of weeks you may want to consider adding the second deep - that all depends on how much of the comb they have drawn out and have filled up.  You really don't want to add room above until they fill out what they have.  Bees naturally want to build and fill vertically so you have to "encourage" them to utilize the frames "horizontally" before you add room above.  Does that make sense?

Hey dfizer,

Makes perfect sense. On inspection last Saturday they had fill out about 1/2 to 2/3's of 7 frames. I don't do deeps I only do mediums. The problems is we are in flow now and they seem to be filling a lot of comb with pollen and nectar to the point I am afraid the queen won't have enough room to lay. This was a pkg install and I am loosing bee everyday so if she doesn't have room to lay I won't be getting any new bees soon. Also if they feel they are out of room they will swarm even though they don't have the numbers.

In any case I go in on Saturday and see whats happening. I just know they are going like gang busters.

Thanks

I hope your right and need the room this weekend. But dfizer is right about too much vertical space to work in. I have added boxes too soon only to have the "chimney" effect. thats where they build up through the center and ignore tthe outside. It lets them utilize the heat better.
