Title: tanging a swarm at s m a school
Post by: schawee on July 04, 2011, 12:00:35 pm
went to the s m a school to check on the hive they have there.after adding a box on the hive i was leaving and notice a lil swarm on a guide wire.the queen took flight.and the tanging started.i got them to land on the box.it was cool seeing the bees in flight and coming down and landing on  the box when i was drumming on  the bucket.enjoy,            ....schawee   tanging a swarm at sma school (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ok7SiHgzp04#ws)

You are somethin' else!  And, like JP says, you are the best 'queen finder.'

I am going downstairs as soon as I finish this post to see if I can find my 20 gallon trash can lid -- I made my extractor from rhe barrel part a dozen years ago.  The lid is going into my swarm kit.  It ought to be a good "thunder maker."

I was waiting on a eagle eye pistol shot. Guess they would have frowned on that tactic around a school huh?

Two Questions:

What is a sma school?

Is the drumming on the bucket suppose to make the swarm land?

Quote; iddee

Years ago, Grandmas everywhere kept a large wooden spoon on the back porch next to the dishpan. When a hive swarmed, she would grab them and stand in the yard banging on the dishpan like a drum until the swarm landed. Anything can be used, as long as it makes a drum like noise. I used my hand on an empty cardboard nuc yesterday. That's all I had handy.

It was known as tanging, or drumming. Now there is another motion that has been dubbed drumming, so most call swarm calling tanging now.

That answers the drumming, but what is a s m a school?

Nice job schawee!  I tried tanging this year for the first time and it worked as well.  My dad who is 72 years old talks about when he was a kid chasing swarms beating on his moms pots and pans. This was passed from his father down to him. This was the accepted practice to get the bees to move.

I had a swarm land high in a tree well beyond our ladders, and my dad suggested it, so my son and I beat on two cake pans and the bees actually came back to the hive they had swarmed from.

We all stood there looking at each other not really sure of what we just had done .  Dad spoke up and said "See I told you it worked". :-D

Thanks for the video schawee, nice one!

Joe

Great video Schawee. I've heard other people talk about banging on a pot or kettle and they said the bees will land close. Why do you think that could work? What I mean to ask is, how does that affect the bees, to make them want to land?

Very Cool

leechmann, from what i read and what other people  tried to find out is that no one no what make them land, but they do.they have peolpe that say it doesn't work and its a myth.well i saw it work at but2 when iddee did it and it worked for me.i had to do it with that same hive again when i let the queen out of the queen catcher.that evening they swarmed and would not land after 10 min. so i got my bucket and started to beat on it and they landed in just a short time .myth or not i saw it work,            ......schawee

Well done Schawee. Thought you may have had a yellow bucket in the gear by now but Wally has probably got rights on the color but I think you beat a better rhythm than he does.
