Title: Caught my first swarm!
Post by: MarkF on July 18, 2008, 04:39:03 pm
Well last Saturday my wife and I were working out in the backyard. When I heard this huge Buzzing!!! I jumped up and looked at my hives they looked fine and then I saw them about 100 feet from my hives there was a black cloud of bees hovering over the trees. To see that many bees in the air all at the same time is an impressive sight. It took them a while to settle down in a tree (the hardest tree to get to I might add), I let them sit there for about an hour, then donned my gear and went to work, I had to cut a path to the base of the tree, then cut all the little branches that were surrounding them. Next I had to find a way to get them out of the tree in to the box. I used a big bucket, I held the bucket under the swam and shook the branch; they fell in the bucket then I dumped them in the super I had set up. It went pretty smooth considering it was my first time. I'm glad I wore my gloves; there was a bunch of stingers in them by the time I was done, so who ever said they won't sting while swarming hasn't met my bees.
