Newbie from Italy
« on: August 08, 2012, 09:32:42 am »
Hello everybody, I am a new member from Italy. This is my fist year as an amateur beek and currently I have 3 hives (db 10) and 2 nucs, which I made myself, starting from a good queen. Not being entirely satisfied with my nucs making procedure, I was looking for info on small-scale queen rearing, so I stumbled upon this forum; and apparently it is the right place.

Happy beekeeping

Hello Dario and welcome.  I have italian bees :)

Can you tell us anything about the history of the italian bee?   Does it originate from a particular region?  Why was it exported to so many different countries? What is the climate like there?  They do pretty well in our tropical climate.

As far as I know the italian bee, which we call ligustica, is native of northwest Italy (that's exactly I live) and has been exported and adapted mainly in US, Australia and New Zealand, where breeders developed local strains. I live in a continental area, hot summers and cold winters, but the Ligustica tolerates a wide range of climates. I read that it is not well adapted to tropical climates, but I am happy to read that this is not the case.

Hello Dario,

I see that the official name for the italian bee is "Apis mellifera ligustica".  It seems to survive here fine - doesn't have to store so much as it can forage all year round.  When it gets hot, everyone - including people, dogs and bees - all sit outside on the verandah trying to cool off  :)

I have bees in Italy,  in the West Liguria, I read that in Finland 2/3 of the bees   are Apis m. ligustica, it seems to me that there are in Denmark too, but i'm not sure.
We sell queens and asked us ligustica from France, Lebanon, Ukraine, Spain, Poland.
In Argentine there are ligustica too.

To try to answer at Lone I copied a portion of an article written by the president of the 'A.I.A.A.Regine, queens Italian Breeders Association (ligustica and sicula). To mee  is difficult to translate, if somone can do it, otherwise I'll try to translate it.
“The Italian bee in Italy: pensare italiano per l’ape italiana”

Wow, thank you Alessandro, but all I learnt in Italian class was how to count to 12.  But it is too much for you to translate.  Maybe you could summarise a little bit of it?

Hi
I tried to summarize and translate as best I could, certainly I have  made mistakes, I have not studied English, I learned a little reading articles about beekeeping in English, so sorry for mistakes.
Article published in the French magazine Inforeines, written by the President Milli Gabriele
...........ligustica, or Italian beeis certainly one of the subspecies of productive interest, and it's name is often associated with the adjective American, Australian, New Zealand, Canadian, Finnish, etc.., Not to mention the incredible selection for the production of royal jelly in China, and not to mention the fact that although most of the crosses are based upon the ligustica, or the fact that the words most flattering on ligustica have been written by Brother Admas (crossing buckfast) and Ruttner (subspecies carnica)...... there is a remarkable revival of interest in the productive possibilities of this bee.

But what is ligustica in Italy? Perhaps the answer, if we find it, we can help you understand. If you stop  to select the Italian bee, ......, if you let free to find his balance or the harmony without the intervention of man, after a very short time in front of us eyes an incredible panorama. What is now commonly, in Italy and abroad, is considered for the outward appearance the Italian bee, is replaced by a morphological variety, color and shape imaginable. For lack of space we can only proceed in a hurry: you lose a little  the blond "Bolognese", for which it is known in the world, but it gets to its extreme, very similar to the black Carnian. The midpoint is a leather quite dark, but with a range that goes up to the uniformity of color, to streaks or stripes particularly strong and incredible elegance,... "punctuation" in the back of the abdomen,   streaks, and that if it were a woman, you could say that make it extremely charming and seductive........ a large variety of body size and agility, to the extreme that resembles the slender length of "Vespina centroitalica" ("small wasp center Italic"), so called by old beekeepers, that I just had time to see  into the Marche and has since disappeared.

The morphological diversity is accompanied by a no less incredible variety of behaviors, which can range from an almost aggressively up to an extreme docility, a total sealing of the comb to its opposite, from 9/10 combs deposition up to a maximum of five,
with position on the comb very diverse, from.... excessive reserves of pollen  and honey, to her total absence, and with very diverse forms of storage, a great productivity in honey or few pounds,......a wintering with so much honey, that in March must be removed to make room for brood or few honey, a lot of brood from March until late September or few brood until  July, with a production of jelly well over 10 grams to frame,  to two / three domes accepted, etc.. etc.. With a tendency to behave mediate between the extremes, but always with great vitality, strength and hardiness. If I had to define the Italian bee....I call it exactly like this: versatile, flexible, viable, robust, rustic, and with such care of the nest(brood) che la più amorosa delle gatte gli fa un baffo.

This wide variety of behaviors and consequent choice in selecting the characters might be the cause that made the Italian bee subspecies of a more suitable business activity, and we have to imagine that the chances were much greater at the end of ' nineteenth / early twentieth century, when it began to experiment with different subspecies for beekeeping training. The reasons for the reduction in behavioral variety are known to all: the varroa in the first place, but also a selection often reckless and careless of the future of the animal, etc.. The result, in spite of the wealth still available, is that the variety is subjected to successive cuts and progressive, as a funnel that progressively narrows..... The problem is to adapt through natural selection, the productive possibilities of the animal, what the animal can give  in his behavior, to changing production requirements. On the other hand select means precisely to choose, and this is possible where there is a choice: to eliminate, inhibit, support for a particular purpose, that changes are in response to changing production requirements. Where this is not possible, you can not select.

In the past, Italy has had great teachers breeders: there were no computers, research centers, institutes, associations, etc.. , But with their ability to observe first and then eliminate, inhibit, promote and change the selection practice, have been involved in the selection and beekeeping worldwide innovator of farming techniques. From shortly after the mid-nineteenth century Tortora, and then Pen, Piana, etc.. names that the whole world knows beekeeping world, and they have built, together with others, the prehistory and history of the bees. But the feature that makes them unique was perhaps being too great captains of industry: producing with numbers that now we often   fail to match, exported all over the world, and the animal that have developed, working with their experience the possibilities offered by the ligustica, ran up to the radical transformation of agriculture, climate, beekeeping techniques, etc.., which took place over the last two decades of the twentieth century. Nothing is perfect, each has its pros cons, but the Italian bee may worked better than the other bees ............................ .................... E 'difficult to assess the exact numbers in production today in Italy, but we evaluate it in 300.000/350.000 queens ligustiche for business, with a slice, perhaps more than the 40,000, goes abroad: France, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Scandinavia, England, Baltic States, Greece, Middle East, Mediterranean Africa, Argentina, China, etc.. The production and export of queen bees today often accompanies the parcels bee and nucleus of 3/5 frames .......

Regards
Alessandro

Dario, welcome and I like a site:  mdasplitter.com  Where Mr. Mel Disselkoen describes a methodology that is so simple I made it work.   When you say cold in the winter, what do you define as cold?
