Title: 1st bee removal (and hive)
Post by: D Semple on April 18, 2011, 03:06:42 pm
Did my 1st cut out yesterday, what a blast. Bees were very gentle and I only got stung about 6 times all of them on my hands and wrists.

Thanks for all the instructional video’s JP, Schawee, Scott and Peggy, and others, I couldn’t have done it without you all. Thanks especially to Michael Bush for your website and all questions you have answered.

That was great Don. Just like JP's and Schawees's  :-D :-D :-D and you even found the queen which is very special.

Those videos that JP made are truly inspirational and educational and easy to learn from. I remember when I went out last summer to do a cutout with my friend Shawna (who is completely mesmerized by JP's techniques) we were both laughing the whole time and saying things like "Look my frame looks just like JP's"" We even considered removing our bee outfits because the bees were so darn friendly, and I did remove my gloves when we were looking for the queen.

Looks like you are on your way to becoming a very good beekeeper.

Thanks for sharing
Annette

Annette, you think maybe my wife thinks I've spent to much time watching these removal video's??? Some of our texting during the cutout.

I was thrilled to find the queen and it was shear luck. I kept looking and studying each section of comb as I pulled it out and framed it up and never did see her. I was all done removing the comb and putting it up in frames and decided to use my new Robo bee vac to finish up and so I picked up the two boxes of bees to change out the bottom board and she flew out and landed on the ground right between my feet. (Thanks Robo)

Thanks everybody, can't believe we even get paid to do these removals.   :-D  :-D

Did you fabricate your hive bodies? What type of wood and joinery?

Charles, my main hobby is woodworking and I cut and dry my own lumber which makes it cheap. I make all my own equipment and frames and I made 3 fancy garden hives out of Walnut for my wife. That's the frames, boxes, and bottom board you are seeing. The joinery is just finger joints.

Once I get bees moved into them I'll post up the garden hive pictures.
