What busy girls my bees are!
« on: April 20, 2009, 09:05:12 pm »
I finally figured out how to upload a video to youtube. Unfortunately, in order to get it uploaded I had to change the format and size, so the quality suffered. In the original one from the camcorder you could see them bringing in several colors of pollen. Yellow, Orange, Brown, White, and almost flourescent Orange. You will probably miss that here with the poorer quality, unless you look realy close.
These are one of my first two ever packages in my brand new hives. I installed them last Wednesday onto brand new Pierco plastic frames/foundtion. I haven't looked in to the hives yet, as I'm waiting a full week to let them get settled in. I've only peeked in to see how much sugar water they've taken. I've got quart jars above the inner cover inside a super so I can check it without really disturbing them.
Now, can I assume that they've already built out some comb since they're bringing in pollen? I figured that maybe one out of every 8 or 10 had pollen. What would the others be doing? I don't think there is anything in bloom yet here other than maybe a few spring flowers and dandelions.
Anyway, this is so much fun so far.   :-D

Giggles... You're hooked! You got it bad too, just like me! Welcome to beekeeping! The others will be bringing in nectar or water. :)

Mine are doing the same. I have not seen them bringing in any white pollen but we do have the flourescent Orange, I would love to know what that is coming from ????

Rick, where in Snohomish are you ?

Old English,
I'm near Lost Lake which is a couple miles off SR 522. Not far from Welch Rd. Halfway between Woodinville and Monroe. Probably about a mile or so as the crow flies from the confluence of the Snoqualmie & Skykomish Rivers. You're up near Lake Bosworth?

Good question. I'm following what I've read and what I learned from my newbee beekeeping class. I'll change the reducer to the larger opening after about 6 weeks, then 8 weeks later take it off completely. Supposedly, by then, they should be strong enough to protect themselves.
