Title: Removal in Gun Barrel Colorado
Post by: Boom Buzz on July 26, 2012, 03:27:52 am
Just a few pics from a removal I did earlier this week.  These were the friendliest bees I've worked with.  I didn't get a single head butt.

The entrance is on the right edge of the bay window...

Pretty much filled the right side of the cavity under the window...

The comb on the right side was brood.  The comb was very orderly...

However, the comb on the left side got a little crazy .  Lots of empty comb on this side.  However I did get about 50 Lbs of honey...yea!

Got about 15 medium frames of brood...

I am pretty much out of wooden ware, so it looks like this is the last removal of the season for me.  Now to focus on honey and harvesting.  Hoping the alfalfa flow picks up soon and is strong.   :-D

Cheers to all!

Nice job John, good size colony and it looks like they are orienting to their new home well.

Thanks for posting.

Very cool!  Great photos.  Did you find the queen?

Thanks gentlemen!
I did not find the queen, although she seems to be very prolific, so I hope I got her in the bee vac.
There were a number of bees that ran in behind the siding where the bay window connects with the house.
They were fanning and I thought may be she ran in there.  I went back at dusk hoping to find a small ball of bees with the queen on the comb remnants, but no luck.  They were still going in and out behind the siding.  I eventually took off a couple of the siding pieces and exposed about 50 workers, but no queen  :?.  So hopefully she was in the initial vac box and is acclimating to her new box!

Looks like a great job!!

Wondering about the empty comb, could they have been sprayed at some time, maybe even a different colony?

G3 there was no evidence that any spraying had taken place, and the owner said he did not do any spraying or attempt to deal with them.  He actually is allergic to bee venom and is moving in so needed them dealt with.  The empty comb was deeper into the nest and so not as reachable from a spray standpoint anyhow.  I think the empty comb was just extra storage capacity that was built and used in a previous year when a really good was flow was on, but now is just excess capacity given the this years flow.  The comb was good, but had lots of folds and creases in it.  Not straight and orderly.

One day I'll get a job like that:
1) Close to the ground
2) Easy access thru the siding
3) Calm bees

And I'll also win the lottery..........
