I noticed this evening that there were quite a few drones coming back and going into the hive, is this common?
I noticed a hornet trying to get into the hive, but the workers would repel it. Then one of those drones landed and the hornet hit it and took it to the ground and appeared to be stinging it and wallering it pretty good and it looked like the hornet then flew right into the hive, it happened pretty fast so thats what I think I saw.

Yes, I would say all is common right now. I've seen that happen too in my hive.
As a matter of fact, as I tool a frame out of my hive today to look around in the super, I later found a wasp with its' head in a cell drinking up honey that was yet to be capped. I quickly shoo'ed that one away.
Depending on your weather, you might think about an entrance reducer to allow the bees to protect the hive a little better.

Bumble bees, wasp and hornets are getting ready to hi-ber-nate.
Of course they will come around any time, but will increase this time of year.
Keep an eye on that hive that has drones, the worker bees should be pushing them out anytime now. If they are allowing them to stay, they may have in mind to rear another queen.

Well they are pushing some of the drones out, some are kicked off the front porch to the ground and they are just about dead, and others take flight as they are pushed out.
Once they are evicted, do they try to return anyway, or are some of them returning from a cleansing flight or do they do the cleansing flight thing.

odds are the girls are getting rid of them this year, they might return but when the girls deside for them to go they will evict them.....
