Make that 1.......lost a hive due to starvation.  They didn't have enough stores and I was too late getting feed on them.  I tried dry sugar as a last resort but it was too late.  Oh well...live and learn.
Former beekeeper until March....maybe next year...RIP

Had 5 before Christmas.
Lost 4 of 5 to SHB again over the Christmas period!  :-x
Back to 3 thanks to 1 swarm moving into the empty boxes in my shed, plus a trapout I completed last week.
I think early spring I will do a split and make a few nucs up, even if just to bank some queens incase I have problems, then who knows what swarm season will bring.

Crikey, ML, that sounds like the very first hive you had with the SHB trouble.

By the way, I have 2 hives now after giving a small split away this week.  One hive is in town and was nearly kaput until it superceded, and now is booming. (Booming for me is surviving with the potential for getting some capped honey sometime in the next couple of years).  The hive at home is a tough queensland survivor which has to live in the harsh conditions like every other creature here.

"In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag...We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language...And we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."

Crikey Lone, the fact that you've even been able to do a split must mean your bees are doin a lot better than last year when you were havin a Barry Crocker!

ML, Those 2 queens I bought from southern Queensland certainly set me back.  The hives grew weaker and weaker and one I couldn't save.  The other I took into the bee hospital in town, where at least there is something to live on all year round.  It was down to about 2 frames of bees and didn't really pick up.  Then it superceded with a terrific laying queen.  But she went above the excluder.  So she was shaken down to the bottom where she went sulky for a couple of months.  I thought she'd gone because she refused to lay.  Then she found her way up the stairs again and filled the top super.  So I put the excluder over the 2 supers and she filled both up with brood.  With the help of the bee doctor there we condensed it back down to one brood super and she's happily producing a strong hive.  Maybe I can split again in Spring and hopefully extract then too. We haven't had a good winter honey flow this year.
