For stings,   use bad words.    :-D

In the old days, someone would put chewing tobacco on it.

there are lots of home remedies out there! The only one that ever worked for me (when I cared) was meat tenderizer. It breaks down the proteins in the venom.

I'll let KathyP chime in with her remedy :-D

Claritin seems to keep the swelling and itching down, but that varies so much for me it's hard to tell.

you guys have no guts!!!

extra strength Vagisil.

Active Ingredients: Contains: Benzocaine USP (20% - External analgesic), Resorcinol (3% - External analgesic)

that's more Benzocaine than you get in most anti-itch meds and at a much cheaper price.

for the immediate treatment, i keep liquid Benadryl at hand and take a swig when i get stung.  it's child strength, so you don't have to get to wound up about dose when you are in the field.

got great advice at Bud3 last year.  i have giant swelling when i get stung and don't want to be drinking Benadryl if i'm driving.  now i take Loratadine before i go on a call or if i am really tearing into my own hives.  it helps a lot if i get stung, doesn't make me loopy, and i can take Benadryl later.

I can't wait to see my wife's reaction to:
Honey, can I borrow your vagisil?

I was out of town for my parents 60 anniversary this past weekend and I had asked her to check the hives to see if they needed supers. She was a champ and for the first time she opened the hives and checked them. Everything was great until she got to the last one and knocked it real hard to get the screen top off. 2 bees came right out and stung her on the nose and on her right arm. She called me up to see if it was all right to leave the top off until next week. She did put the top back on, after the stings settled down.

Is the dosage 1 or 2 teaspoons every six hours? I keep forgetting and that stuff tastes really bad

More stings untill you dont swell anymore

Worked the best for me. I hardly itch and almost never swell anymore, well except for last week when one nailed me in the forhead just walking across the yard.  :?  Both eyes swelled up and my face was very puffy.  Hasn't happened since last year, something to do with getting stung in the face. Must be the soft tissue.

Vagisil???    What the heck, how in the world did you ever think to try that?  Not sure I can bring myself to ask my wife to borrow that.

Michael, do you grow your own plantain's or can you pruchase the leaces somewhere?  I would like to give that a try.

Careful what you start. The plantain is a weed that will soon take over your lawn if your not careful.

More stings untill you dont swell anymore
This actually worked for me.  My first sting swelled my hand up so bad the skin started to "weep" and I thought it'd split.  After purposely stinging myself every two to three days for about a month, the last time I got lit up (8 total stings, one in the lip) the swelling went down within 24 hours.  In the meantime, lots of benadryl.

You can try it orally, but then you'd be like the Professional Cheerleader suing the birth control jelly company because she was spreading it on her toast in the morning

We used to get treated with a blue bag!  Probably most people will not even know what one of those is, but the ones we used to get here were were like a piece of pool cue chalk used to add to the washing to get your clothes nice and white.  I haven't looked in the supermarket lately to see if they still sell them or not.  As I remember the swelling never got too bad when a liberal coating of "blue" was applied, but maybe I don't react too badly to stings and/or the blue was a cunning ploy to pacify my screaming!  ...it's a bit of a novelty to paint various body parts blue!  I must research this further to see what they put in those little blue packages that might help with stings.

The first time I was stung by a European Wasp, I thought that I was going to die, then I became afraid that I wasn't going to die ;), but seriously, that was not all that pleasant and the little darling had a pretty good go at me before I got her out of my jacket.  The recommended treatment was a few pain killers and half an onion applied to the affected area.  Maybe the onion does something, but it stil hurts :'(   The onion may also help with bee stings.  The second wasp sting I got, I was pretty quick to get rid of the wasp from my arm (benefit of experience) and the effects were relatively insignificant.

I must say that the Vagisil idea is brilliant, I'm going now to check the medicine cabinet and the cupboard under the bathroom cabinet for supplies.  Thanks for the hint.

MSA first aid kits had StingFo swabs.  Man they worked great. Now you can get sting swabs and sting sticks at most pharmacy's and "Wally world".  Calidryl(topical) and Benadryl(internal) are good too.

I usually don't take nothing for a bee sting.
But last year I got in a hot hive and got stung about 100 times from the waist down.
Now I did take a Benadryl capsule then.
I use to carry a sting stick but I'd forget about having it at the time.

Took a sting in the eyelid last Sunday and didn't swell at all.  Back when I first started (in the early 90's) my eye would have swollen shut.

I don't know about the venom but it might denature you.  :-D
Especially since the sting leaves an opening in your skin. Your skin it your only protection from shock. If you prick your 2 pointer fingers and touch them to the 2 terminals of a AAA battery it can kill you very easily. It will at minimum heart your heart.

Both sage advice. I premed with 25 of Benadryl before I go out to the hives. Works pretty well. I'd heard about the meat tenderizer, but haven't tried that. Baking soda paste, maybe.

I developed hives once...that was unpleasant.

Who needs pain meds?   ;)

And hello, all, btw. Nice to be here.

The bleach pen works some. Small so easy to keep handy It also might cover the sting pheromone so other bees are less likely to sting .  I  usually say that was uncalled for and put my gloves on. If several stings I evacuate and regroup for few minuets I often have plantains around to eat so will try that.

ed/La there might be some confusion about the plantain.  I believe that Micheal Bush was referring to the following plantain:

http://www.examiner.com/images/blog/wysiwyg/image/english-plantain(2).jpg

You crush the leaves and rub the juice on the sting.  The pain is gone almost immediately.  It works for me.
