$95 for 5 frame nucs and $85 for 3lb. packages

just $10 between a nuc and package, I am surprised they even sell any packages. someone would be crazy to buy packages when they can get a nuc for close to the same price.

Around here
average price for a nuc is about $100.
average price on a 3# package is about $65

I've been told to get $90 for 5 frame nucs in a cardboard nuc box this year.  These will be mutts from south Ga and you pick up.  We don't like the packages and luck lots of people have installing them so we don't shake and sell them.

I keep a list of about 30 package suppliers with information on prices (incl. shipping to my zip).  I also collect nuc and queen prices.  The list won't be complete until January, but currently, the average price for a 3lb package is:  83.38 and the average prices for nucs are:  3 frame - 95; 4 frame - 100.75; 5 frame - 110.00.  These do not include shipping.  Nuc prices are based on many fewer totals.

If anyone wants the entire list, pm me in January, it is an excel file

$65 for a 3 lbs package of Italians.
NUCS are anywhere from $80-105 around here from what I'm seeing.
We ordered six packages last night and might increase the order if some of our hives die.

The reason they are so close in price is a nuc usually has to be picked up and not shipped most of the time. a package is usually shipped. So a package is about $30-$40 cheaper if you pick it up like you would a nuc.

I am paying $175 per 5 frame nuc for russians, 20$ for shipping.  I think that this is expensive, but The bees I got here last year are good producers and very quiet, so it is worth it.  I got some nuc's from other suppliers and they were $150 and hot as hell.

you must be getting them from Dwight, He will have a Russian yard here in Lincoln County Ga. this year. We are going to fill all of his equipment and all of mine this year thats why he isn't selling a lot of nuc's this year.

me and Dwight have been kinda working together at times the last few year, we are very good friends, you can see he even post me on his site in the "about" section, he is one of the best friends I have had. very good person and will stand behind his bee's. he stay's at my place for a week at a time during queen rearing season, we get about 3-4 week earlier start here instead of his place, then he gets his place going and this year I am going to go to his place and stay and help.

looking forward to picking them up in May.  This was my first year of beekeeping- started with 2 hives (packages) now down to one.  Didn't get any honey :(-  Hopefully it will make it through the winter.  It seems strong (but what do I know) -hopefully I'll have 3 going forward.

why does no one ship nucs?

why does no one ship nucs?

Probably quite a lot of the reason is ventilation. And weight/cost. And moving combs crushing bees (possibly the queen?). And.. And..

Y'think it's tough to get nucs, just try getting a package shipped - insured - to Alaska. I'm desparately hoping at least one of my hives will make it through the winter so I have something to breed from.

The fatbeeman was shipping nucs last year. I like the looks of his stock but its cost prohibitive if you want to get more than one because its expensive with the shipping but at least he offers it, or at least he did.

Fatbeeman still ships nucs.  I have never had any of his bees, but he has a good reputation.

I thought he still might, he did last year but I didn't want to post for sure if I hadn't checked into it.
Someone posted somewhere last year that he lost alot of bees that he sent through the mail, they sat on a postal truck or something and there were issues with the postal service accpeting bees.
I don't even remember where I read it but this person claimed it was quite alot.

Nucs were $85 for 5 frames here last year.  I got one for 60 because it was late in the year and they wanted to get ride of it.  It was loaded plum full of brood.  I dont know why you would want a package when you get five frames, brood, and stores included.  Although you can find out they have chalk brood a week later like I did.
