Question about pricing honey
« on: February 27, 2005, 11:37:36 pm »
I'm a little confused about the "per pound" vs "per quart" pricing of honey.

If you were to sell a 5 gallon pail of honey to a healthfood store, how would you come up with a price?  I see that $4 per pound seems to be a ballpark figure on another forum, so could I also get your input?  How much does a quart of honey weigh?  Thanks.

This is my first post here, and I must say, this is a very impressive site!

1 gallon of honey weigh's about 12 pounds, 4 quarts in a gallon so 12 divided by 4 = 3 pounds a quart if I'm right and if I'm not , I'm sure someone will correct me   but remember the larger the bulk the lower the price, who in here sells 5 gallon buckets of honey and what is your price?

I don't sell honey in that quantity, but a local beekeeper near me sells 40 pound(seems this is the limit for carryon objects in airports)pails for $80.00. In larger sizes like 33 gallon or 55 gallon they ask anywhere from .65 to $1.40 a pound. Quite a range, and I am yet not sure if color determines this or whom they are dealing with at the time. Like any other agricultural enterprize prices vary greatly by region I am certain. Supply and demand, demand and supply.Generally if you sell too cheap, from my experience, the consumer might think you are offering an inferior product. So to answer your question-find out what honey retails and wholesales for in your region. Doing homework can really help when formulating a market strategy,no matter what size operation the may be. Good luck and unlike me maybe you can sell more than you give away. :)

Just checked my new copy of "American Bee Journal" and they report a range of prices for 5 gallons = ~60 pounds - $80 to $120 (roughly).

I think the range takes into account different grades of honey and location.

Our honey in this part of Michigan is selling for an average of $2.60 a pound at the farmers markets and road side stands. On the high side some in the area are getting as much as $4.00 a pound, they do most of there selling at road side stands.

1 gallon = 4 quarts
1 quart = 2 pints
1 gallon = 8 pints
1 pint = 16 ounces

   Honey Weight

if a gallon weights 12 pounds
a quart weights 3 pounds
a pint weights 1.5 pounds
a ounce weights 0.09 pounds

Retail Price doesn't equal Wholesale price.  Wholesale is about 50% - 60% of retail.

If someone is buying 80lbs from you and especially if they are going to package it themselves.    $2.00/lb - $2.50/lb  is a good rate for Hobbiest Wholesale price in the northeast - No jars.
