Farmer Spraying Procedure
« on: June 02, 2006, 11:59:18 pm »
I have a hive on the edge of a soy field, and I was wondering what I should do when the farmer comes to spray the field.  The Field will be sprayed with roundup.  Should I seel my hive for a day or two or not worry about it?  The Farmer will be spraying with roundup.

Or, should I only worry about it if the soy is in bloom?

Roundup is a herbicide, so any damage should be only to the plants, and not to any critters :) The fellow behind my pasture raises various crops each year; sprays with what I surnise is roundup or a variatino of it; I have not noticed any effect on my bees.

This is the second post I have seen referring to roundup. I thought roundup was sprayed on plants to kill them, at least thats what i do with it. Why would a farmer spray his crops with it? Does it just kill the grass and weeds and leave the crops alone?

I'm confused...

I read that post too...  I have never used chemicals on my crops.  What always puzzled me is how, according to their website and labels, it kills "grass and weeds" w/out harming the other plants...  Also, while the chemical itself would not physically harm the bee, could it be transferred to the honey, by virtue of being sprayed on the plant and leaving a residue on the pollen/blossom/etc?  And how high would this concentration be in the honey; would it have any adverse effects on humans?

Sounds like a question for the USDA, anybody seen them around?

Being a farmer I will explain why the farmer is spraying roundup on his soybeans.  The roundup does'nt harm the soybeans because the are a geneticly enginered variety that is "roundup ready".  The spraying only kills the grass and weeds which in turn makes a cleaner feild for harvest.

Roundup is very common stuff to destroy weeds. It is the same what you think about. It is normal and weed field are handled. There are flowering weeds but it do not affect on bees.

In our family we have distribution of work. I take care of small things and my wife takes care of big thins.

Big things are what family thinks about religions and Russian and I handle estate amd car transactions.

Relax. I cannot doom globe from bees view.
