Ok, I'm OFFICALLY a beekeeper now.
« on: June 13, 2009, 08:58:29 pm »
I was stung for the first time today.
I was helping my friend Ralph rob his hives and 4 of the little rascals
climbed under my pants legs and nailed me on the ankle.

Wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be.

I agree I would MUCH rather get stung by a bee than a wasp..... I tell people that 75 % of people have been stung by a wasp that think it was a bee...
To bee or not to bee that is the question I wake up to answer that every morning...

Ralph got nailed on the nose when he helped me and also got nailed today.
But the sting doesn't swell him at all.
Ha also took one to the wrist under his watch band both times also.

I'm a new bee also. I got my first sting when I wasn't even messing with the bees. The old timer I bought the bees from was loading the hive into my truck. ( of course he was wearing a short sleeve shirt , no gloves or hood.) I'm standing 10 ft away and one gets me on the hand. I found out that I'm mildly allergic to be stings. I now don't go within 30ft of my hives without full battle gear.

Let's study bee vocabulary for a bit....

Allergic...Rash over whole body, itching around head and face, lips swelling when sting is on other parts of body. Throat swelling, difficulty breathing.

Sensitive... Swelling in the area of sting, tightening of skin if in a constricted area, such as finger. Itching begins hours or days after sting.

Now, are you allergic or sensitive?

Allergic or sensitive?  Does it matter?

I am sensitive.
One sting itches and the muscle under it is tight and itches.
But just one of the stings.

Since one can easily be fatal and the other cannot, I think yes, it does matter.

however   if you are extremely sensitive to stings, as i am, you should be prepared for an allergic reaction.  get  your doc to write for epi pens and keep benadryl close.

there is a difference, but one type of reaction does not preclude the other.
Someone really ought to tell them that the world of Ayn Rand?s novel was not meant to be aspirational.
