Title: second check on the hives.
Post by: jgaito on June 14, 2010, 10:37:42 am
i got my two nucs on May 6.  in an eight frame deep i had five frames from the breeder and three plastic frames.   i checked them quickly without a veil about two weeks ago to check for growth and they had totally ignored the plastic frames.   i was putting together wooden frames with foundation for the second deeps i was hoping i would need so i pulled the plastic out last week and replaced them with the wood units.   checking yesterday, hive one, very sedate bees, had not yet pulled any.   hive two, the one that stung my hand, had drawn out about 50% on all three frames.  this hive was not very happy to see me even with smoke and sugar water.  there were no swarm cells and the queen is small, unmarked and difficult to find.  should i be concerned that she may be gone.  i wanted to get out of that hive so i didn't check for eggs or laying pattern as i'm very new at this.  there was a fair amount of uncapped honey.

Suit up, smoke em up and then go back in for a more thorough search for brood and/or eggs. If you dont see any, or cant find a queen, then be concerned. You could order you a new queen or do a combine of the two hives.
