I realized the other day that I've never known a president that hasn't lied to me.
Maybe Carter? I can't remember one from him.

Maybe you weren't listening to him, or paying close attention.

That is a good article Dallas, Thanks.

I still recall when Carter got on television to tell all of us that the oil shortage was "real". As for me and my buds who worked in oil refineries and had been laid off right after shutting down most of the plant, we knew it was a a story. All the tank farms were full and the plants had been up to full production right up until one day pink slips came in the check.
At the time I thought he was either a dupe and misled by big oil or he was a willing participant in this con game. Either way I was not impressed. I think he makes a fine ex-president.

Herb,
At the same time the Delaware Bay was full of oil tankers sitting low in the water waiting to un load.
That is how I new it was all a lie.
A reporter checked the tanks of a closed gas station and found and reported that they were full. The next day they were empty.

You can tell WHEN they are lying too.  When they are lying, their lips are moving...

Yes, I remember the sequence of events of the oil shortage.  First the convenience stores started using gasoline as a price leader.  The oil companies did not want this, so they cut off their gasoline supply.  The convenience stores went to the courts and the courts ordered the oil companies to sell them gasoline.  So they jacked up the price to the convenience stores who again took them to court and won.  So they said they didn't have enough gasoline and couldn't sell them any, and the courts said they had to give them a "fair share" of the gasoline.  I was working in a gas station that winter and pumping gas for $0.25 a gallon.  The boss came in and said we would be selling it for over $0.55 a gallon by summer.  The oil wells were all shutting down and a shortage was being manufactured.  I didn't believe him.  He was right, though and by summer there were lines and rationing... this shortage lasted until about 1980 or so.

This is all interesting. I was not alive during the oil shortage but this sounds nothing like what we were taught in school. Of course you have to take school history with a grain of salt.

There is a book I read (can't remember the title at the moment) written by a retired Secret Service agent and the section on Carter was mind blowing. Not what you thought you knew.... behind that big grin.

It's interesting thinking back on Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and the character of Zaphod Beeblebrox, president of the Galaxy and how much he reminds me of President Trump...

There is some of every US President in Beeblebrox.  Various Prime Ministers and Presidents of other nations, as well.
A well-designed character.
Winter is coming.

I can't say I hate the government, but I am proudly distrustful of them.

Certainly.  But I was thinking of his brashness and his flamboyance...
