Omaha, NE 'beehandler' on a mission

I have helped another beekeeper in the area for awhile, till he 'retired'   I have this year taken up my own hives. I started out with 2 hives in my yard, now down to one  (I gave one to someone else who really wanted one) it is a 10 frame Lang.  I am seriously investigating top bar hives for the very near future for my purposes.

I am currently working on setting up a 'community' apiary project, kind of a 'managed co-op' situation.  my primary intention is to increasing healthy populations of honeybees.  Secondary to that is to help others to take up working with bees and start their own hives, which works toward fulfilling my first objective.  I can't keep all the bees.  heh heh.

As I said, i will be starting primarily top bar hives for this spring, but  iam interested in learning more about warre hives as well.

matter of fact, that's how Ii found this forum by googling for warre hives and a thread here came up.


I view myself as a conservationist.  My personal position is to do what works best for the bees, first and foremost.

I'm just outside of Omaha.  The Nebraska Beekeepers Association is doing scholarships to get young people into beekeeping.  You might want to get involved.  We always need mentors.  :)

Thank you all.  I look forward to being more active in Nebraska beekeeping  venues.

 I am in kind of an interesting position.   I have some degree of experience helping another beekeeper, so I am not exactly a neophyte, yet, this is my first effort at working my own bees and my own yard.

Where his interests were commercial, mine are in conservation.

  I try to apply the old carpenters rule to learning and bee handling in general.  "read twice, do it right the first time" or something like that. ( yes, I know the axiom is really "measure twice, cut once" this was as close as  I could make it relevant.)

I hate to ask questions that have already been answered, yet, it seems  I invariably end up doing it anyway.  At least  I make an effort to keep needless questioning to a minimum.
