Checking hive in the rain? Newbee question.
« on: April 07, 2011, 01:01:24 am »
We installed 3 new packages of bee's on Tues. afternoon, we are planning to check them on Sat. There is a high possibility of rain all weekend, can you check on the queen if its raining ?

wait.  they tend to be testy in bad weather.  to look for the queen you pro ably have to go deep.  better to do it on a warm day when they are  flying.
Someone really ought to tell them that the world of Ayn Rand?s novel was not meant to be aspirational.

The only time I open hives in the rain or even on a rainy day (between the rain) is if I'm rearing queens and there is something that MUST happen today.

As new beekeepers, it's natural to open up your hives to see the remarkable things these insects do.  But remember, when you do open them up to take a peek, you don't need to see the queen each time.  Evidence of the queen is good enough.

flyboy:  You said "packages".  Is the reason for your check to make sure the queen has escaped from her cage?

If so, how long can he wait to make sure she's out?
