National Honey Bee Day Theme for 2011
« on: January 10, 2011, 03:47:30 pm »
On the National Honey Bee Day website, we have been running a poll to decide the 2011 theme. I thought it would be neat to add a poll here to see what the members here like.

Thank you for any comments and voting.

Well, not really.  Only one third support the top choice.  That could mean that 2/3 really hate it.  There is a better way to select a consensus choice.  It's called the instant runoff, or is known by several other names.  The Scottish legislature uses it and I think maybe New Zealand does in some way.  North Carolina used this system in the 2010 Appeals Court judges race.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Instant-runoff_voting

Simple.  Just rank the choices.  Throw out the one with the fewest first place votes and redistribute the votes of those who chose it first, giving them their second choice.  Rinse and repeat until  one choice has a majority.  This system, while not perfect, is mathematically much better in arriving at the consensus choice.

Q:  How do beeks spend their time in the winter?   A:  Discussing voting systems and Bjorn's sexuality.  :-D

Well then, put your thinking cap on. We add requests to the list all the time. Last year we had over 50 we started from that were submitted by beekeepers. We then narrowed that number down to 5 at the PennApic fall dinner. That is the five you see listed.

We had such classics as......

I hang out with 50,000 angry females.

Beekeeping: So easy the First Lady can do it!

My bees voted for the old white guy.

Beehive: A Utopian society ruled by women!

Natural Local Honey: Always HFCS Free!

Beekeeping: Better in the NUDE!

Apitherapy: Free healthcare from Nature.

Spread Honey Bees...Not homeowner pesticides.

Anything submitted goes on the list for next year.

I will give it some thought, wasn't trying to offend, I just didn't see what I thought to be a good representation of National Honey Bee Day.

I like the "one flower at a time" option...fits right in with my biz card "helping the environment one bee at a time".

Scott
"In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag...We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language...And we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."

Yep, that was my choice too.  At a time when the world is looking at grand gestures, this makes the point that we.... and the bees.... can improve our world through our own individual efforts.

I didn't want that one as anytime I hear "saving the earth" or anything else like that I am instantly turned off.  To me it's all flash and no bang.  It's a platitude with no real substance and has become nothing but a marketing slogan.  I don't believe I am saving the earth by keeping and rescuing bees.  I do those things though as well as growing a lot of my own vegetables, heavily recycling, planting native saplings, making and setting up dozens of blue bird houses over 30 acres and even regularly picking up trash out of the creek that runs through my back yard, etc.  The earth will be here until the sun swallows it in a billion years or so.  We're not going to save it.  Whether or not we will be around when that happens has yet to be seen.

These are my interpretations and are not meant to impugn anyone who disagrees.  I chose "Sustainable agriculture starts with honey bees" but I'm not really in love with that one either to be honest.  #1 & #3 sounded like 60's hippie slogans and #4 and #5 I didn't care for.  Dang I'm picky...  :-P

Thank you for the comments.

One of the things we look for, is a cross-over meaning that is not just a beekeeper mesage, but one with a broader appeal and understanding from the general public.

It is hard. On one hand, beekeepers themselves may like one theme. But if you were doing a function tailored at non-beekeepers in an educational format, the theme may need to be something else.

We also want one that most bee associations would be able to fit into any presentation they may be doing. One that they can take and present as beekeepers, yet connect with the public.

Personally, I favor those themes that can connect with the general agricultural community. Farmers, gardeners, environmentalists, etc.

I did favor "Spread Honey Bees - Not Homeowner Pesticides!

I wonder how that one would of been voted on if it was a choice.
