Real winter come in
« on: January 19, 2006, 01:55:19 am »
We had mild winter here until this week Siberian high pressure reached Finland. Temperatures are about  - 20C - -25C  on the are where we use to keep bees out. It is -4F - -13F. Wind is exceptionally strong.

in Moscow  1000 km to south east from here weather is exceptionally cold. Worst temperatures are -30C  (-22F).

Problems or not? Which Moscow. I noticed 12 Moscow in USA!  . Only two had minus grades.

There is research here in Finland how bees can be managed in snow tunnel. Out temperature is just now -25C and in the tunnel it is -6C.
They measure temperature in and out hives and carbondiokside inside hive and in tunnel.

And welcome to visit to our forum. We manage well with winter and varroa.

Bees make cleansing flights during  March
Snow cover goes away during April.
Willows start blooming about 1.5.
Apples bloom  first week of June.
Dandelion starts blooming 28.5. and ends. 10.6.

Grass starts to grow on lawns about 15.5.
Farmers start their field works after 1.5.

All night frosts are gone 10.6.

This is a heck of o lot colder than my homebase in western NY. This year the average January temps. are above normal. Today(1/22/06) the present temp. is -3C or 26F. I wonder what the rest of this winter will bring.

If you think that's unseasonably warm down here we're at 80ºF!  That's the average for April!  On the plus side, the bees seem to like it.
