I dont think a virgin queen looks any diferent from a mated one. she may just be a smidgen smaller.

You know you can catch more bees with honey than you can with vinegar.

is this just for educational purposes, or are you looking for one in your hive?  don't wish to discourage you, but they are really hard to spot.  they don't hang out like mated queens.  the bees around them don't give you the same signs as they would around mated queens.  they run and hide and you'd be lucky to spot one by accident, especially in a bigger hive.

The virgin that was in my observation hive looked almost exactly like a worker bee, same size.  No pictures though for you  :'( , and she's done and got fertilized so looks like a regular queen now with a big bootie.

Don't sweat it...Mick is used to us with our "smart" comments so he's trying to preempt us. :-D

No, I don't have any pics.

Hey won't vinegar keep the bees healthy?  Maybe I just heard it was the cure for CCD?  Sorry can't remember!

gee thanks guys.  now i'll probably have some freaky dream of finding a queen in my hive that has the head of MJ on her.  guess as long as she doesn't moon walk and waive a sparkly glove at me, it's good??

The reason I asked is that I am unable to find the queen in the original hive, the swarm hive from it (swarmed Tuesday last week) or the nuc that I made up with a frame with 3 queen cells from the original hive (hope that makes sense). No eggs in any of them, but plenty of capped brood and they are bringing in nectar and pollen like bees possessed. Queen cells in the original hive but obviously none in the swarm hive.  :?

Seen plenty of them....

they have the same leg structure that the regular queen does, but her butt is smaller and to me it looks triangular almost, big waist tapering to a pointy butt.

They will be in any part of the hive, they move fast, they DON"T have the nice ring of attendants.  So very few of the regular queen finding cues.   They will be very very difficult to find one if you are looking for one.

Another week or so and check for eggs.  If you are worried you can keep adding frames of eggs from a different hive, if there is not a queen in the hive they will try to raise another.
