Title: Vaporizer
Post by: RC on September 29, 2013, 09:49:19 pm
I'm going to do a alcohol roll next weekend on a couple of hives. If mite levels are high, I'm thinking about vaporizing oxalic acid for control. I've been looking at a couple of vaporizers and am looking for recommendations from folks who've used them. A poster on Beesource is selling one that looks pretty well built. Anyone have any experience with this one? I've also looked at the one built in Canada ( I can think of the name ). It's been around a long time, any pros or cons with that one?

This is the one I have.
I use some long speaker wire and large alligator clamps to attach it to my truck battery.
It works great.

Same here but I put a 20ft pc of orange extention cord on mine after tripping over the speaker wire more then once.   I've had mine for over 5 years now

Based on the above recommendations I purchased the Heilyser. I was going to use a home made pipe type. After reading the MSDS on the acid I had second thoughts. Better safe than sorry. I'm still going to use the half mask respirator with acid cartridges, JIC.

and add enough wire to get you away from the burn and you wont need the half mask

How long does it take for the vapor to dissipate?

Well, I guess if the Heilyser is the vaporizer of choice for all you guys, that's good enough for me. Thanks for the responses.

I would say if you let it cool for about 30 seconds after the burn leaving it sealed in the colony, you will be safe.   My yards are mostly 20 coloies each and time is money so I pull it out at 2 minutes and wipe it with a damp rag.  Before you use it just experiment out of a hive.   Fill it, and plug it in watching your watch.  notice how long it takes to stop boiling and then how long it takes to stop smoking after the power is shut off.

I have one of those also I am using it with a lawn mower battery  and keep the setup in a 5 gallon bucket.  I have about 4 feet of wire and it works great. I set timer for 3 min so burn time is 3 min then I let it cool in the hive for 3 min before opening up the entrances and removing the vaporizer . that way when I load it for the next hive it does not start to vaporize before I am ready.
