Where do I find good honey in Pennsylvania?
« on: August 14, 2012, 06:43:54 am »
Hi y'all, I'm coming to visit. My family and I will be in PA for a week about the start of November and I would like to try some different honeys. We will be flying in to Philly and driving up around Allentown where we are staying. We are hoping to visit Reading, Lancaster, Gettysburg amongst others but I will certainly squeeze in a sidetrack if there is something worthwhile. So, can you recommend a good shop/market/roadside stall where I can try, and buy, some different varieties please?

Buzzbees cupboard is still empty as I have not yet extracted.
Allentown is quite some distance from here, but if you are going to be in the Lancaster area be sure to check at the roadside farm markets for local bottled honey.I was there over the weekend and saw honey at quite a few locations. Look for jars with the names of individuals as this will be the best chance for local honey.
I also saw a lot of Dutch Gold honey, but don't let the name fool you. It is a commercial honey packer with honeys from all over the US and foreign nations. Probably a very slim chance of any pure local PA honey there. The honey is probably fine, but a bit deceiving by the name in my opinion. However they lay no claim to it being PA honey at all.

Here is a map with popups of local club Presidents that may be able to put you in touch with someone close:

See if you can find fireweed honey, Berny.  I tried some when I was in washington a couple of years ago.

Be sure to bump this thread closer to visit time. You may get a lot more responses after everyone harvests. Be aware,it may be hard to get honey on an airpalne from what some have told me. TSA is goofy about liquids in jars!!

Just go the local Post office or UPS and mail your honey home. (not your "honey", your honey. :idunno:)

Uhm, yes, well. There is no emoticon to indicate smacking oneself in the forehead. Thanks Greg and Jim.

buzzbee, I was planning on checking out the local stalls, I'm looking forward to seeing Lancaster, my wife's relatives are Pennsylvania Dutch background. Occasionally you find a store that specialises in honey varieties, I just wondered if there was something similar nearby. I also stumbled across the Dutch Gold website in my research.

Lone, you liked the fireweed? It doesn't sound very appetising, how does it taste?

I am in Mount Joy, just a few miles west of Lancaster.  I don't have a variety of honeys, but the honey I have, all from Lancaster County, is the best in the state (in my opinion of course :-D).    My wife and I have a banquet facility that is open for a Sunday buffet dinner. If you will be in the area on a Sunday over lunch time, let me know, I will comp your family's dinner (your not traveling on a bus with 25 family members are you??)

It was - different, but nice.  If I thought any honey had been diluted with corn syrup, it would be that one.  It was at a big permanent market, and I got to try blackberry and one or two others also.  I also went to a beekeepers meeting while I was there, and visited two apiaries.

Here's a little info from the AQIS site:

Condition  C10055

Non-Commercial

1. An Import Permit is not required.

2. Personal consignments of commercially prepared, processed and packaged honey products are subject to inspection of packaging only. If not commercially prepared and packaged, or if described as unfiltered or unprocessed then the honey products must be inspected to verify freedom from contamination with bees, parasites, and plant material.

3. All other conditions under the Commercial section apply.

I think you just need to make sure it is in properly labelled packaging when you bring it back.

That's a very generous offer Jim, thank you. We are only going to have 1 weekend in the state, we arrive and depart mid-week and I suspect my wife's family will try to pull in all the surrounding rellies for a visit on the weekend but I'll see what we can do.

I understand your opinion of your own honey. Mine of course is the best in Australia! :-D

Bern
