Rain
« on: June 23, 2004, 12:58:55 am »
I have searched every reference book but can't find an answer. What do bees do (not those in the hive) in the rain? We have had a lot of rain and it appears that the bees still venture out. Does it come a time when the rain gets too heavy for them? Will they wait and find protection and shelter until the storm is over? Thanks.

" The Lake District is England's wettest region, receiving and average of 130 inches (330 centimeters) of precipitation each year. The western and northern hills receive about 40 inches (102 centimeters) of rain, while the east coast recives about 20 inches (51 centermeters). "

In Finland mean annual rain is 50 cm.

At least bees carry water for larvas every day.

If nectar of flower is in the shelter, bees are eager to fly even if there is a little rain or it is cold. For examble Himalayan balsam Impaties globulifera atracts bees greatly.

Also heather gives nectar on wet weather if it is warm, and so on.
