Swarming in Michigan
« on: May 04, 2013, 05:57:49 pm »
For all you Wolverines and Spartans out there, get your traps ready.  I caught my first swarm of the season today.  :)

The trees barely have leaves, but that isn't stopping the bees.

Perhaps an abscond or a nearby beek overfed his hive?

I doubt if any feral bees survived this winter in Michigan, with all the losses reported.
I had 3 bee trees that I've been watching since last fall. None of them made it through winter.

I’ve been watching 3 wild hives this winter.  2 of the 3 in trees survived.  The 2 that survived looked pretty strong going into winter; the 3rd was relatively small.  I’m expecting to collect some more swarms from those ferals sometime this month.   It was a long winter and an extended March this year.
