Title: Fireweed seed?
Post by: Shawn on September 30, 2008, 06:19:46 pm
Does anyone have a collection of fireweed seed they would be willing to sell or send me?

I suppose I could walk out my back door and "harvest" some fireweed seed. I am not at ALL certain how to prepare/preserve it properly for transport and replanting. Also remember fireweed actually likes cool weather. It's all over Alaska and northern Canada, but the lesser 48 states (I'm ALASKAN, dangit!) have few areas where it grows well - mostly higher elevations. And it needs to be put on the ground before the snow falls. I don't know why, but a lengthy period of snow-cover somehow helps it germinate.

Oh, well it gets very hot here and sometimes we dont get very much snow. I guess I can hold off on that and see what else I can grow. Thanks

Shawn, find out if fireweed can be indigenous to your area.  We have fireweed galore in our vicinity, and I have gathered to seed in years gone by.  It is simple.  I could go out and gather some today, which I will do anyways, if you so choose, I could send you some seeds.  They are easy to gather, prepare and to send, their are practically weightless.  Let me know if this an interest you would like to pursue.  Have that most wonderful day, Cindi

Fireweed grows like nothing on earth once it gets going.  Not sure exactly of the cultivation of it though, spend some time on the internet and study, you find a wealth of information there, hee, hee.....
