Hands off our Vegemite
« on: November 05, 2009, 09:27:00 pm »
It is hard to imagine but on a really Aussie subject ie Vegemite we have to be concerned that some uncaring US owner (Kraft) of this truly iconic Aussie tucker has tried to adulterate with other STUFF and then had the hide to try and flog the stuff off.

What a hide :-x

Now I dont think that there would be one dyed in the wool Aussie that wouldn't like Vegemite on toast, Vegemite sangers, Vegemite and butter pikelets and and and. I can't imagine all the ways I like Vegemite.. even Vegemite and honey! Dead set! Then I have even heard that there are some from the other side of the Pacific that have tried it and like it so much they are screaming at the US Gov to let them import it . Even like it better than Bourbon!! or their favourite sheila!! But! Hands off, it is ours and we need all we can get. Imagine if 200,000,000 yanks tried it and decided that they liked it so much, there'd be none left for us.

True, but you could also no doubt say that about possum or carp.

It is dirt mixed with salt.  Kids like it be cause kids like to eat dirt.  My nieces and nephews love it. (vegemite, and probably dirt too)
Which shows how bad things are down under.  :-P

At least that is what it tastes like to me.

The Brits have something similar - Marmite.

(i figure this will get to our aussie friends  )

Mmmmm, warm fresh baked bread with melty butter and vegemite. mmmm oh the memories!  I never did think the stuff I bought over here tasted the same as the stuff my friends had when I was traveling.  Leave it to our industrialized food machine to ruin another good thing.

oh, now my mouth is watering!

love,
ziffa

I have a liberal pallet and enjoy trying new food especially cuisine of other cultures.

Where would a common redneck from Georgia go about getting or making some authentic vegamite.  After a quick search I found that vegamite is a spread made from spent brewers yeast and spices.  I do have several friends that are home brewers so spent brewers yeast should be easy to come by.

Clear this up for us folk up top.

We have an Outback Steak house.  That's about it.

Do you have an American counter at your local store?  If so what do they sell at it?

I need to get out more.

Tell you what, if you send me a jar of vegimite I'll send you a jar of peanut butter.  Of course you probably already have that.  I know, pickled pigs feet.  I bet your store doesn't have that.  How about deep fried butter - betcha can't get that in Oz.  'Course that won't travel too good.  I'll think about this.

Found this on the web:

The main ingredients in Vegemite, as listed on the jar, are:

Yeast extract
salt
mineral salt
malt extract (from barley)
colour
flavours
niacin
riboflavin
thiamine
folate

It really sounds interesting to me. Will let you all know when I order it.

You're right about the ingredients Annette.. it is, as any good cook knows, the proportions that make the difference.. and of course the method.

By the way, Annette, I prefer the stuff that comes off the spent brewers yeast :cheer:
