OK guys,
I just got stung right under my eye this morning. Of course, my fault, went up to the hive early without any protection or veil. I was even stupid enough to open up the hive. (Had not waken up yet)
I immediately, scratched the sting and hopefully got the stinger out. Took 2 benedryl pills and made a paste of baking soda and water to lessen the pain.
Right now it feels like someone punched me in the eye and I feel sort of strange all over my face. Numbness coming on here and there. A little itchy feeling around my neck.
Is this all normal??? What can I expect as the day progresses??? I know it is not dangerous, or I would have trouble breathing right away. Is this dangerous for my eye????
I am not upset or freaked out, just want some info if possible.

Annette,
You will experience a significant amount of swelling, so be prepared to look hideous for a few days. If you start to feel sick, then I would be calling the Doc. Hope you are feeling and looking better soon. :)

I was stung under the eye during a similar act of overconfidence.
Little pain or itch until about 24 hours later. The side of my face swelled as the venom moved down, quite a sight! And it itched like crazy for almost 5 days.
I saw a post here about using Vagisil for the itch - makes a lot of sense to me so I'll try it next time.
That's my experience. I believe I've seen others with similar ones. So not to worry if for a few days you look like you got whacked with a heavy hot frying pan ;)

I always swell up like someone punched me in the eye, but I've found facial stings to heal more quickly than others...usually swelling the day of the sting and then the next day, and that's it. Your reaction sounds normal.

i got tagged under the eye as well, It hurt for a bit but I was lucky and didnt get any of the swelling just some itch for a few days. Maybe you will be lucky and once the initial pain goes away you won't have any swelling either. I would think it depends on how much venum gets into your system ie how deep the stinger penetrated and also how long it stayed in your skin.( but maybe thats all wrong , just seems to be that way with this newbees sting experiences) I have had a few hope it all goes away soon for you!!!!

My son got it once right on the eyelid. He thinks it was right on the eye ball. But was fine. Didn't even notice any swelling.

Everyone's vascular and nervous system in the face is different. My dad was stung on the four head and looked like the Hunchback of Notre Dame for a week.
Myself, whenever the dentist injects me with Novocaine on my upper right side my right eye goes numb and I can still feel everything.

Sounds like you're having an allergic reaction to it (or something). The benedryl would certainly be helping with that, so I wouldn't get off the benedryl for at least 24 hours.

Expect a bunch of swelling. In fact, it's probably not more swelling than you might get elsewhere, but because there just isn't a lot of flesh on the face it doesn't have many places to go... so it goes out.
On New Year's Eve I took a hit right on the bridge of the nose and a second under my eye. The first photo titled new years eve beesting is about three hours after the sting. The next one titled new year's day is 24 hours.

The swelling probably maxed out about 36 hours, and then started to subside. The pressure started to drop about 48 hours and there was less pressure on palpation. By 72 hours most of the swelling was gone and I was just left with the appearance of a slightly blackened eye.
There wasn't a lot of "pain" aside from the initial whack and a bit of a headachey stuffy feeling as the swelling went up. Mostly it actually felt as if I'd had a big dental anaesthetic.
That's how it goes for me anyway.
As long as your throat feels ok and you're not seeing swelling away from your face or itching/rash that indicates a systemic type reaction rather than a local one, you're fine. If you're not sure, see a doctor and make sure.

I may luck out on this one. Except for slight eye pain right now, you cannot even tell I got stung. Of course, the next few days will tell the truth. I really got the stinger out right away. As she was stinging me, I was scraping at it.

Annette, hope you are OK. That benedryl is nasty stuff, I can't take it because it whacks me out for the day too. Even the non-drowsy that I have, I don't like that feeling of being whacked out on stupey drugs like that, but I know it does help. (Got a picture so we can laugh, eeks, did I say that? hee, hee). Yeah, I agree that the benefits of benedryl are outweighed by the bad side affects, mainly sleepyness. Unless it is for my kids at bedtime :roll:, then they will actually go to sleep when we want them to.
I'm happy, that although my stings always swelled in the past, I seem recently to have it the no-swell threshold!! :) :) :) It still hurts like fire getting stung. I am much much more confident with the bees though!

Oh Annette,
The first hit to my head really hurt, it was right above my right ear near the temple. The swelling didn't begin for a few hours and then OH BOY. Swelling for 2 days, a full 72 hours until I was"normal" again.
The second hit to the head occurred in the same place! I began to swell faster, and my right eye swelled shut..I looked UGGLEE!!!!!
Ice and benadryl, and maybe even a tagamet might help!

I have been stung in the face through the veil and did not have much of a reaction. I assume the stinger was pulled out pretty quick from the face. I hope it is the same for you. When I get stung in the ankles or hands it tended to be worse.

My son got nailed just below the eye last year, took a couple of days before the swelling went away.
Luckily it was during the summer, otherwise I'm sure we would have got a call from the school :roll:

He handled it fine. I'm sure if it was the first time he had been stung, it would have been much more traumatic. The fact that I don't react and hoot and holler when I get stung set a positive example for him and he actually thinks it makes him tougher when he gets stung. He was actually more concerned with his "looks" than with the pain.

I guess since my blood must be part bee venom by now I rarely swell up anymore.

Update!!!!! My eye is half closed, totally got me good. I look horrible, but I did take a photo. To embarrassed to post it though.

I frequently read and hear from the general public various declarations about bee stings.
Most everyone that gets a bee sting (especially first timers) will have:
1. A local reaction.
Most people that have been stung before will have reaction to the venom in the sting that results in:
2. An alergic reaction.
Some folks will have swelling in the limb or larger general area of the sting will have:
3. A hyper-reaction.
A small percentage of people will be stung and have their throat swell shut or have organ failure, this is:
4. A Systemic Reaction or Anaphylactic Shock.
Here are a few points to consider:
A. In my local area, approximately 1 in 1000 homes encounter a swarm of bees in a given year.
B. The CDC reports that less than 1% of people fall into category 4.
If you do the math, the odds are about 1 in 100,000 that you would be both deathly allergic and have a swarm of bees invade your property.
It never fails, deathly allergic folks are always the one that have the swarm of bees that lands in their back yard.
I am considering mailing a survey to everyone in town about to which degree they are allergic.
The ones that reply they are deathly allergic, I am going to approach to ask if I may hang swarm traps in their yards. I think this would greatly improve my likelihood of catching swarms before they have an opportunity to invade wall voids or attics. In my area, that should net about 60 swarms.

All of my customers well, at least the majority are deathly allergic to bee stings...
at least in their own minds!

Bactine liquid, benadryl liquid, or maybe even sunburn medicine with aloe vera and lidacaine.
The last one I know is very soothing, you can get it at the drug store.

you are working from the wrong side. you have to go from inside out. Like alcohol for example. drink enough and itching will stop! Creams, ointments wont work! I like red wine w/ cigar. Always work'd for me!

If you really wanna get him good have someone from the police come over for a domestic violence call. Have any cop connections? Oh that would be such wicked fun! They would need to handcuff him though and at least put him in the back seat and make him sweat awhile! :-D

Do you have an aloe plant? When I got stung, I cut stem off ours and rubbed it all over, seemed to help.

Yes Aloe Vera might work well. I do have some gel and that is totally safe.
I am doing really, really well right now, but the people at work are having a ball with me. Trying to pick fights with me, calling me Rocky, etc.

So that's what they meant by plantains... I thought they meant like the fruit. But that's a "weed" that grows quite prolifically in my lawn, and in my strawberry patch. Cool, good to know it's useful.

Been ripping out stinging nettle in an area in my chickenyard, and the stolens, the underground runners (is that the right term?), massive whelps on my arms, pain, used colloidal silver water, lessened the pain, I am happy, but still pain.....I know this pain and whelps will be gone by the morning. These are nasties....but they are setting seed, so a must to get rid of. The chickens loved the newly refreshed earth....I think that they are weary of trying to get into this forbidden area, the stinging nettle command this particular area. The Impatiens Capensis are not fully developed yet (yes, the cold, cold spring), so I can't use them for relief, plantain, well, I don't really like to chew on that stuff, it tastes not too good to me, but I know the power of plantain. This is a beautiful day, enjoy these days, and have a wonderful and most special life. Cindi

Got those ferns with the orange dots of a kinda powdery substance on the bottom of the leaves nearby? If so, pluck a full stem and rub that orange stuff into the general area of the nettle stings, and in 15 minutes you'll be good to go. Use it before you get into the nettles to not even get so bothered by the nettles in the first place.

SarMgr. Yep, got those ferns, I think they are the ostrich fern, but maybe go by another name. Too bad I didn't know about this before, hee, hee, I had the battle of my life with them, my arms are still kind of prickly feeling, but almost gone. Now you have sent me off to an adventure, and I love adventures. I still do have an area that I could attack. Maybe....just maybe....later I will grab a fern frond and rub it on my arms and head into that patch, advertently getting the nettle stings. If I do so, I will post my results of this experiment, I love to experiment and I am not afraid of pain, hee, hee. Have this most beautiful and wonderful day, to live like there was narry a tomorrow. Went to let my dogs out this morning and my male ratter was the first one out and a bee stung his back lack, he's been a baby the entire day.
If I try and take the stinger out he tries to bite me for real, teeth and all, and I know he would do it.
I'm thinking of just leaving it in or having my wife place a towel over his head like we did when we had to remove a tick from between his toes.
She's not real excited about the project but I just don't know if leaving it will turn into some infection or something.
What do y'all think?

I'd re-dog. I like my dogs just like my bees, calm and non-defensive.
Seriously though, Is he licking it a lot. When my black lab get stung on the paw, she will lick it like crazy, and sometimes get the stinger out herself before I can find it. It would be best to get it out, but I wouldn't risk a trip to the hospital for a dog bit though. If bears and wild animals can survive getting stung, I'm sure your dog can too.

But this dog also has seizures. He hasnt had one in a while (At least where we can observe)But he used to have one about every two weeks or more. We learned, after the last episode, that this is a great time to cut his toenails! He doesnt see anything or know anything but he looks like he does cuz his eyes bulge out :shock: So, while we try to hold him down so he doesnt hurt himself we take this opportunity to cut his nails! :)

But this dog also has seizures. He hasnt had one in a while (At least where we can observe)But he used to have one about every two weeks or more. Both of my rats get seizures, the male just very seldom, the female, we have to give her pills from the vet every day for 'em, she once had three right in front my wife.
The vet says long ones can leave permanent damage because the body temperature is greatly raised during a seizure. It can cause brain damage.
Oh, we took the stinger outta his leg and Chooch is back to normal runnin' around as if nothing happened but he did mope for 3/4 of the day. The bee def got the best of him, poor lil fella.

JP, John, oh dear. We had a dog once that had seizures all the time. He was on medication daily to help prevent them. It did help to a certain extent, but he still had those now and then. I can recall the disorientation after the seizure, I know what you speak about. I recall one time after his seizure he ran straight into the fireplace, thank my lucky stars it was not on. Eventually this dog had to be put down. It broke my heart in two or three pieces for sure.
It was a night, about midnight, we were still up (yes, in those days we did stay up a little later than our 9:00 bedtime now, oh brother.....those were the days, hee, hee). He went into that grand mal, but he did not come out of it...it carried on and we called the vet. Yes, in those days, you could call the vet and he would attend his office in the middle of the night. He had warned us that a day would come when he would have that grand mal that would not stop. That day had come. I remember my youngest Daughter and my Husband packing up this German ShephardX dog in a blanket, the seizure in still full blown happening. They took him to the vet and he didn't come home. It brings those tears to my eyes still to this day. Crockette, a dog that I loved to pieces.....there have been many dogs that have come and gone....a shame they don't have the lifetime of us humans. One day I am sure I will see all my dogs again. Have that most beautiful, wonderful day, love our lives. Cindi

After I had my tonsils taken out I had a secondary infection that raised my temp. to 107 by the time I was taken back to the hospital. I went unconscious, but apart from that I didn't suffer from any dain bramage... I mean brain lamage... I mean brain damage, that I know of anyway. :-D

I had pneumonia about 15 yrs ago and my temps got to 105 1/2 and my head felt like it was in a vise, the doctor said that's the temp when your brain starts frying, ouch!!!

Our Chessie pup we had use to try and taste the bees and they would nail her. They were fine when she was on top of the hives, but preferred not to be candidates for tasters choice.
