Hard drive recommendations request...
« on: March 02, 2013, 12:19:21 pm »
I'm looking at putting another hard drive in my computer for added storage.  Currently I've got a Western Digital 160gb ATA WD1600JS-75N inside the box and a 1TB WD Element external usb drive hooked up.  I believe the current internal hd is SATA II.  The computer is an older Dell Dimension E510...not a hotrod, we don't game on it and we're hooked up to the internet via slow dsl.  I'm just looking for stable storage.

I'm looking in the 500gb to 1tb range and below $100 price range.  My understanding is that SATA III is downward compatible to SATA II. :?  Here are a couple of drives that I"m looking at...

TSD-1000FAEX ::WD Black WD1002FAEX 1TB Desktop Hard Drive - 3.5", SATA, 7200RPM, 64MB Cache, 5-year warranty

TSD-1000AS7 ::Seagate ST1000DM003 Barracuda 1TB Hard Drive - 7200RPM, 64MB, SATA 6Gb/s

Feedback anyone?
Thanks!
Ed

I also have an older Dell computer.   I was going to write to recommend looking at Samsung....I purchased an additional Samsung internal hd and am very happy with it...fast and very quiet and the installation was easy.  But I just saw that Samsung and Seagate have "aligned" their businesses, whatever the heck that means.   Over the years I've noted that the hd's I've had that died were WD's.  I do have a WD that came with the computer that is still chugging along, and an external WD I use for some backup that works just fine but I've become leery of the brand for the three dead ones I've had to replace.  No science here, just an observation.

Thanks for the feedback, reefhugger.  Observation is good with me. ;)    I've still got a good bit of room left, but I know the current internal drive has got *several* years on it and I would like to move it to a slave and install a new primary.    I'll wait and see if Tiger or Newegg comes out with a deal I can't refuse. ;)

Take care,
Ed
