Captured my first swarm today - Oh what a feeling
« on: March 07, 2012, 02:20:50 am »
Now I know why you all do it.   :)

Went out with my mentor and rescued a small swarm from a front yard Olive tree.  What a great feeling!
Today the bees went home with him, but sometime soon they will be going home with me.

Can hardly wait     :bee:

It's a rush aint it?

"In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag...We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language...And we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."

It's even better when they go home with you and end up doing really well!!!  My best hive coming out of winter is from a swarm 2 years ago.

Congrats.

Not sure I felt like a real beekeeper until I caught my first swarm.  It was awesome.

When you tell people you go collect bees out of trees, off buildings, etc., they look at you kind of funny (especially when you are a 61 yr. old woman)  :-D

Great!

It's even better when there's onlookers to marvel at your prowess, especially when you are not wearing any protective clothing.

Good for you.  I remember my first swarm...........ahhh the good ole days.

That first swarm I caught and hived was huge.....about 5-7 lbs.  I hived them on wax foundation and was astonished they drew out 10 frames in a week.

Catching swarms always give me the warm fuzzies. Nothing like standing in the middle of a big swarm, watching them orient & doing the march!

Hope you get you one to take home soon!

I love how everyone "gets it" when most of the population would be cringing and running away :)

Hehe, my husband is bravely facing his fear of bees along with me.

Isn't it fun to be braver than one's husband?

Mine gasps and runs backwards when they come towards him :) And he's a big, burly, bearded hunter. To cover for himself, he calls me "crazy" instead of "brave," but we both know better.

Yep.  Everyone on this site gets it.

I was so excited to have completed my first swarm rescue that I sent an text message to my kids.
The response I got back was...That sounds dangerous.

My response...Nope.  Just amazing.  Absolutely AMAZING.   :)
