Daffodils in bloom
« on: February 16, 2012, 01:35:37 pm »
I was shocked to see daffodils in full bloom at church last Sunday.  Yesterday the ones in my yard bloomed out -- in mid-February!
The girls are bringing in pollen like crazy.  I am sure there must be brood but I don't want to pull the frames to look.  At this rate they will be swarming in March.

They are bringing in pollen and almost certainly brooding up so don't let them starve!  So many people are surprised when bees starve out in the spring.  I bet there will be a lot of colony loss this year because people will assume they are bringing in nectar.  These early sources are mostly just pollen.

Yes, I am making sure they have plenty to eat.  Just added a full super of honey from a deadout I had. And will keep watching.  I am sure they could be going through stores fast, as active as they have been.  You would think it was June as busy as the front of the hive is on sunny days in the 50s and 60s.

The alders started flowering a couple days ago, most the trees look ready to go here.

Well if they were here, this year they would be blooming in March.

My bees are bringing in pollen now too, I noticed a couple of dandelions today also. This mild weather has lots of stuff budding out early.
