under the dome.  30 CDs.  not a bad story.  i think it will translate well into a mini-series.
Someone really ought to tell them that the world of Ayn Rand?s novel was not meant to be aspirational.

This is my biggest beef with audiobooks - them being kept in MWA format and NOT MP3. The reason is obvious, you could never get people to shell out $60 for a book on 30 CDs (Under the Dome) in MP3 fits on 5 CD. Nearly all books fit on a single CD in MP3, just happens the bitrate of Under the Dome is very high and take more than typical - being 34 hours adds to that too obviously.

Most cars are equipped with an MP3 player or aux. jack today, so having a MP3 version is compatible to nearly everyone now.

I tried to enjoy it, maybe another hour and I'll catch the fever, but it was getting tough hanging in there any longer.

I do have Stephen King's The Long Walk to listen to - 100 boys set out on a walk that goes until you can walk n longer than you are "eliminated" in ways Stephen King eliminates people.

Also Joe Hill (Stephen King's son) wrote Christmasland - a horror book where "Everyday is Christmas and every night is Christmas Eve" for the children a psychopath steals from the abusive parents he kills (from the jacket at Audible, not me giving away the story) where the kids get to play such wonderful games as set the hobo on fire and other wonderful Christmas games.

So many books, so many great readers - I have my headphones plugged into my iPhone hours a day listening to these at work and plugged into my docking station when at home.

I finished under the dome a while back. Also just finished the Stand and watched the movie as well. It was really something. I am taking a break right now from Stephen King (will get back to him again). Reading (And the Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini. He wrote the Kite Runner which is one of my favorite books.

I thoroughly enjoyed "The Stand".  Wondering John which character you got all choked up about when they died?? (I have an idea, but wanted you to tell me. You really get your money's worth with Stephen King books. My favorite character was Stu Redmond although my heart goes out to Tom the disabled man.

I can't wait to see the series on tv Under the Dome. I know one of the characters in Under the Dome is that same man who played in Breaking Bad, you know the brother in law (can't seem to remember his name).

Yes Annette, I did get which book you were on mixed up. Glad you got through the Stand AND watched the min-series (truly one of the best TV mini-series from a novel).

MAJOR SPOILER IF YOU HAVEN'T READ THE STAND!!!

The event that choked me up was when Nicky Andros was blown up in the closet from Harold Lauder's bomb in the box in the closet. Long before Rob Lowe played Nicky, I had a picture in my mind and Rob Lowe played it perfectly for me, as did nearly every character in the mini-series. I had just grown to love the character and the bond he and Tom Collins (spelled M.O.O.N.) Tom Collins had.

Here's a book I read decades ago now and I believe I still know ever character's name, I cannot even say that for my favorite book Lightning with at best 35 characters besides historical figures of WW2 politics. Still hope you put Lightning on that short read list :)

I was right about which character you were upset about. Yeah Nick was so sweet.

I did purchase Lightening and have it on my Nook waiting to be read. I have a few other books I want to get through first, but will let you know how I felt about that book.

Cool about having Lightening! Let me know for sure :)

I hope it is your cup of tea, I enjoyed it for a lot of reason, any dealing with issues found in other love stories (all Koontz Books are love stories - even the Odd Thomas series if you are open minded) and Lightning is a classic love story that even time itself is a character. Nothing else to say, but many good stories transend time, few though are written by Dean Koontz :)

About the Nook, I have the 3rd edition of the Kindle but sadly (I guess) do I ever use. My one complaint was how often I found myself turning pages, even with a medium small font. There is a wonderful program for downloading content from online newspapers, public domain or other downloaded ebooks in all formats that works magically with the Kindle and I am quite sure it works with all readers called:

Calibre (said as in gun caliber) not cal-ee-bray as I have seen Youtube videos on. It allows you to compile different news magazines from RSS feeds of papers, and have the daily papers in you own grouping by favorite news or topics, etc., so you are the editor and beside newspaper and online magazine articles, it is a very powerful ebook file format changers, so to go from MOBI (Kindle) to EPUB
(Nook) is a click away, great when you cannot find a book online in your own format and great for making books in Acrobat PDF, TXT, DOC and other word formats.

It's just a great program to have in the computer if you do ordering and searching on the computer - it's http://calibre-ebook.com/ for you or anyone interested in ebooks.

Oh.... I'm excited, only 30 minutes left to the Joe Ledger book 4 left, and #5 will be started at bedtime tonight - woohoo!!!

Lastly a shout-out to my favorite book ever LIGHTNING by Dear Koontz, a true paradox of love and time travel from WWII to current time with a cast including Churchill and Hitler - a very powerful book, a fast read and one that stays with you as vivid as The Stand.

I concur. That book started me reading all of his books.

Sweeeeeeet!

Reminds me of the Odd Couple TV Show when they were kids, one said to the other "What do we do now?" and the other other said "Let's read a book... me first!"

Just finished the 5th and seemingly final Joe Ledger book (by Jonathan Maberry) and read by Ray Porter - I have to say, for a series, this ended as my favorite. For another series, The Jack Reacher Series is a great group of books, but some had failed in the latter books as exciting, and there is nothing not exciting about Jack Reacher - don't measure Reacher by the ridiculous portrayal by Tom Cruise in the movie.

Reacher in the books: 6ft5in 240-250lbs solid, smart and fast. His stature humbles people, nothing about Tom Cruise humbles anyone.

But back to Joe Ledger, a kicka$$ special forces leader with an awesome team, powerful influential and connected people in the Warehouse which was ground zero of the the DMS - Department of Medical Science, the official name of the group Ledger was captain.

So book 5, this one dealing with collected UFO (the black triangle kind) which were both reconstructed originals using what were called Truman Parts, as well as complete man-made craft built by blue-prints secretly smuggled out of China to the USA. Ledgers team's objective, stop the use of these mach 20+ craft before one country and a band of dooms day preppers started an alien inspired end of the world scenario.

Enough said. Book 1 through 5 dealth with man-engineered zombies, super-human fighting forces, vampires bread from generations of selective mating, aliens, and a few other creatures not seen before in books.

All in all, I hope more books follow, and although this was a 2012-13 book to audiobook, it was written as if it were the last. Hope Jon Maberry has a 6th up his sleeve.

A couple of things....

I am behind on Under the Dome (TV) and I don't know, it's not like I'm dying to see the next episode. Seems like a Summer filler, that falls short of previous SK mini-series, but yes, I am behind and could be wrong.

Next :)

ANNETTE: Did you ever finish Lightning, I swear if you said you did, I missed it. I was wondering how you enjoyed the last few fast paced chapters that left me turning pages faster than this slow reader knowing can do!

I started a new series by Jonathan MaBerry called the Pine Deep Trilogy - shame Ray Porter doesn't read it, the fellow who does is a bit more mono-toned than I am use too.

Pine Deep is known as Scariest Halloween Town on Earth, but holds a dark secret which readers calls eerie once you get into book two - their big complaint is book one isn't complete on its own, it just leaves you hanging, expecting to read book two and three. I guess if you are told it is a trilogy to start with, being left hanging could be expected, but I don't think I have ever ran into that before - I think EVERY book should stand on its own!

Yes

I finished lightning and just loved it. In fact, thanks to you, I am a fan of Dean Koontz books. I just finished "Watchers" and I think this is one of the best books I have ever enjoyed.  Just purchased Dean Koontz "Intensity" and "Whispers". Will let you know how I like these as well.

Hope you are doing well.

Watcher too was great! I haven't read the other two interestingly, I'll keep them in queue.

The next favorite of Koontz is Dragon Tears - another interesting look at time, but not travel this time. It's another fast paced book too!

About lightening, I think I love it so much because it does all of what Koontz does so well in one book - minus JEALOUSY which WATCHERS (you know well) is very much about - the beastly creature is so jealous of the dog, you can taste it.

Oh... Watchers was turned into THREE different movies, only the second followed the book as well as the Stand mini-series followed its book. I believe it was too a made for TV movie, but if you can find it - I think you will love it.

Glad you enjoy Koontz, I have read so many of his books, but nearly as many unread exist. He has at least 5 Odd Thomas series books, and as many Frankenstein (not the famed creature) novels - lots to read.

The book Strangers too was turned into a mini-series I believe, at least a movie for TV.

Keep reading, he has written for a long long time.

Annette:

I know I have given you 4 years of reading lately, but please, squeeze in SWAN SONG by Robert McCammon when you need a Koontz break! EPIC as the stand, and easily in my top 5 books.
