Hello everyone
« on: June 24, 2004, 10:51:19 am »
Hi, my name is Shelly. We live in Washington County, GA - near Sandersville. This is our second year having bees. We have 11 hives.

My husband has always wanted to raise bees and he came across someone that was getting out of the business. This guy gave him a veil, gloves, smoker, and a hive tool. We ordered some bees and got started. This was suppose to be his thing but it has turned out to be mine. :?

Last year we got about 10-12 pints of honey-but figured it to more of a sugar water honey, since it wasn't very strong at all and it was very very light. This year so far we have brought in 78lbs and there is more to extract. We don't have extractor but a fellow beekeeper from church let me come over use his 4-frame electric one. Wow was that a time saver and I didn't lose the comb. Last yr it was mess getting the honey out.

I thouroughly enjoyed this forum and I think I have caught up on all conversations. Found and joined the site yesterday. I am looking forward to getting to know you all. And Beth we are really not that far from one another. I have passed through Eastmon on occasion. My husband has friends in Rentz.

Thanks for this forum John.

Hey Shelly-
I looked on a map and saw we're about equal distance apart from eachother to Dublin. We'll have to see about meeting some day. With gas prices as they are, I can't say I'll be going to Sandersville any time soon. :) But it's not out of the question for that to happen someday. But having lunch in Dublin sometime could be quite possible for me.

This is just a short note to you today. I'll make sure and write you more later tonight in PM, and get you my phone number.

I'd love to have some beekeeping friends here close to me. I get to share and visit with everyone on the forum, but it would be even better to visit in person and share over lunch or the phone.

Beth

I was in Atlanta last thanksgiving, my brothers GF's parents live there. If I find myself going there again I will have to let you know.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome. I really look forward to sharing our bee experiences.

Today I will be visiting the girls and adding some excluders that don't have them. I will also be adding the GardStart treatment to the ground around the hives late this evening.

Thanks again for the welcome.

Yes, Beth that would be nice - I, too, try to stay off the road but for some reason it does not work out that way. We have 4 boys and there is always something to do. My husband is a brick layer and for some reason he always seems to forget something - so I am always having to take him mortar or some tool he forgot and he wants to know why I have to gas up when I do. Men!!

What kinds of beekeeping tools are available to you there? What is it that you are having a difficult time finding?

I'd also like to say, if you have just a few "handy man" skills, you can MAKE many of the things needed for a hive and beekeeping.
