My most recent boneheaded move...
« on: January 17, 2012, 01:29:39 am »
I had a quart jar of honey that was almost empty but the honey was a bit hard and needed a warm up to loosen things up.  So, I put it on the stove in a double boiler with the heat on low.  I got distracted and 4 hours later all the water had boiled off and the honey got so hot that some of it bubbled up and out of the jar.  What was left was dark like molasses and so I poured it onto a paper plate, now it's hard candy.  I ruined it for my consumption is it also ruined for the girls or can I used it for feeding?

Is a quart worth the risk?

The sugars will have caramelized.  I think that makes it toxic to the bees.

The carmel is not good for the bees and worse in the winter if they don't have flying weather to void the solids.  I am cheap too, but just trash it or use it to add to your braggot.

You should have thrown some nuts into the mix for some brittle.

Honey nut brittle, I have all kinds of nuts too (besides my family and me).  Sheesh, I just screwed up on top of screwing up.

Seriously, thanks for the input everyone...it's in the trash...good thing it was just two inches at the bottom of the quart jar.

You may have made honey candy in the hard crack form depending on how hot it got. I used to make that for the kids and they loved it.
