Title: queenless
Post by: zzzzzzzzpr on June 15, 2013, 06:32:28 pm
I went to do my weekly inspection and the wife confirmed that we are queenless.
in a picture I have multi eggs in cells. Its been about 2 weeks maybe that my hive swarmed.
I do have an empty swarm cell but no queen. I cant buy a queen for 6 more days then the shipping to me.
I still have half my brood is worker bee and 1 bar combined of drone atm.
will my hive be ok til I gat my new queen?

Give it a few days. After a swarm the new queen hatches and has to mate.
Then, being new to the job, she fires  some blanks and multiple eggs, but usually
doubles and not the 3-4-5 that laying workers do. She sill get the hang of it.

In 8 days you'll probably have some capped brood.  If the caps look like kix cereal, then you have laying workers.  Otherwise, I would assume it's a new queen getting the hang of things.  Look for other clues.  Laying workers usually can't reach the bottom of the cell.  Late mated queens can't either.  Laying workers usually don't lay a good pattern, in other words, with laying workers the brood is spotty, one larvae here and one quite a ways away.   Laying workers are fond of drone cells and will lay on top of pollen.  They usually lay a LOT of eggs in a cell, not just two or three.
