Drill holes first smaller than the nail you plan to use. THen drive the nail in. If your hole is slightly smaller than your nail the nail will still do its job. Also if you use some wood glue thenthe joint wont be totaly dependant on the nail. ( coming from a carpenter )

i use a pneumatic stapler for my frames.  1 inch staples. 2 on each side on the top and one on the bottom.    no splitting.  you might want to glue, and staple the tops.  they stand up to years of prying better if you do.

One inch staples with Tight Bond III glue all the way.  A blunt 1/4 inch crown staple one inch long, splits wood less than nails, brads, or drilling pilot holes then nailing.

Must not be drilling the right size hole  ;)

try what you would like to do. If it fails then you know not to do that again !

I glue, then nail before the glue dries. I've nailed a lot of frames and splitting hasn't been a problem.

Oh, add your location to your profile so we know where you are.

use good glue  the nails or staples are only needed to keep them square until they dry.

I say use your brad gun. Also, go with a wood glue that says "exterior" or "interior/exterior".
