Title: Finally!
Post by: hardwood on August 17, 2010, 09:32:43 pm
Caught two small feral pigs in my first set of the season yesterday and decided to set them free. Set the trap again and caught a nice 200 pound sow and another young male. I'll "finish" them with feed for a month or so until the weather turns a little cooler before the slaughter.

I'll have to try for a different one for Bud's...the small one is headed for the spit for our "first annual honey harvest festival" on Sept 25. The big girl will be fattened up a little then cured for hams/ bacon etc.!

I'm thinking a nice 80-90 pounder would be right for Bud's?

Can we see more of the trap?   I would love to have land available for pigs (not my land though).   I hear they are as much fun as they are trouble.

The only fun I find in them is the wiping of the mouth of bbq sauce :) Otherwise, they are public enemy #1

Here is one that found her way to my grill in smaller bite sized pieces this summer.

Here yo go Allen.

I have several traps. This is the one that caught these two. The one I like the best is 8'x6' and has a swing door that will swing in but not out. The pigs smell the bait and push the door to get in which closes behind them. They can't push it open to get out. I've caught as many as seven pigs at once in that one.

I'll try to get you a pic of that one if you'd like but right now it's on loan to a county park.

Sweet.   Spring on the door?   And do you leave it on the trailer.

The door on the big trap is hinged at the top so no spring needed. This one is just a simple slab of plywood held up with a pin. Works like a havahart trap.

The trailer is actually a bee trailer. We just used it to unload the pig-heavy trap from my truck and wheeled them back to the sty.

them hogs got a good bit of domestic in them (curly tail, lack of hair) should be good eatin. I gave up hunting and trapping them earlier this year. got to be to much hassle up here. we ran them with dogs. what a blast. didn't carry a gun. just a bulldog and hobbles. the wife likes the wild hog meat better than the store bought

Thankye. I had won a rifle on one of those football score board thingies.  It was a Browning Medallion 25-06. Never had a 25-06, was more familiar with my 30-06, so it was debatable on wether I was going to keep the rifle or not. (Only have $20 bucks in it) It dropped this sow and two more at 215 yards so I think its definitely a keeper. That was the first day I had shot the rifle. Sow was just under 250lbs and finger licking good I might add.
