Title: Sarah's trapout...... and the generosity of a beekeeper!
Post by: jmblakeney on March 18, 2012, 11:25:07 pm
I had recently talked with G3farms about the possibility of tagging along with him and allowing me to look over his shoulder on some of the honeybee calls he gets this yr.  He was gracious enough to allow me to come with him but he quickly informed me that he would put me on the front lines while I was with him.   :-D
This day was awesome I learned a whole lot from an experienced beek about a trapout and gained a new friendship (I hope he thinks the same).

Now I named this post with a secondary title of "and the generosity of a beekeeper" for the following reason.  G3 had asked me about my total honey bee loss over the winter.  I only had two hives but lost both.  While we were discussing arrangement to meet and do the trapout.  G3 told me that he was going to give me these bees.  It really surprised me.  I couldn't thank him enough.  George is a great guy and friend.

Thanks so much G3.

James you forgot to mention just how gentle these bees were, we were all up in the entrance of the hive and they never once tried to even head but us. After all was said and done and we sere standing around talking then there was a couple that was a little pissy.

James it just sounded like you needed some bees for the upcoming year, so there you are  :-D :-D

I enjoyed the company and hope you learned something, I know I did. Each trap out or cut out is different but the same. The entrance of the hive was way up inside of the rock wall and had us scratching our head on how to seal the entrance to the backside of the trap cone. Then the hill billy in-g-nu-ity kicked into high gear. We needed something to extend the entrance to the outside of the rocks, only thing we had was an empty caulking tube which was not long enough but the home owner just happened to have a piece of 1 1/2" PVC pipe. After extending the entrance out and attaching the trap cone, "it was on".

I think I made a pretty good friend this day and a very nice fellow beek, James you are more than welcome!!

All that fun and free bees to boot. What more could a beekeeper need? Great job.

Great video.  Thanks for sharing it with us.  I was really impressed that you got the eggs to show up on camera.  Please keep us informed of the progress of your cutout and new bees.  That was really cool of George to give you the bees.  Great story.

Awesome video.  I enjoy people videos on how the tackle the challenges of doing cut outs and trap outs.  I have found that most bee keepers are pretty good folks even though we all are a little off  :-D.

Nope, we can't overlook it, where would be the fun in that?  :-D So, pull out that lil big wheel & put on a pink tutu & stroll around for all the world to see.  ;)

When do you let them go back in and rob out the old hive?

The videos were fabulous and I thank you for sharing these.
