Title: venom collectors
Post by: PricopArthur on April 14, 2008, 10:15:50 am
I am just curious who is collecting venom here. I also have some questions:
1) It is efficient?
2) Do you recover your investment fast?
3) For how much $ do you sell the venom?
4) You use home-made venom-collectors? If you do, can you post a sketch of your venom-collector?
5) Bees get angry after collecting their venom (I wanna ask this because some venom-collector sellers said it makes the bees more calm after applying the treatment.. and I don't trust them, because I think they just wanna sell their product. Their collectors are only for the entrance of the hive)
If someone has to comment something more than these questions please do it.
sorry for my bad English

Why would you collect venom from honeybees :?  They die after they sting, the stinger goes in your skin and when the bee leaves,  her intestine are pulled out and she dies. collecting venom means killing your honeybees
"Bees get angry after collecting their venom"  No, They just die.

I understand that the bees do not die anymore... it is a safe tool. The sting penetrates the plutex plate, but thee bees can take it out. Not like the human skin.

I also read about this device that the the bees sit on a copper plate and a very small electrical charge is applied which causes droplets of venom to come out and drop on this plate.  From there it dries on the plate and is scraped off.  I guess it's pretty efficient and doesn't kill the bees.  The venom can be rehydrated in a lab too, so theres no need for it in a liquid state.

At the same time, I don't think there's much of a market for honeybee venom really.  Besides a small ammount of scientific research, I don't think theres hardly anyone who would want to buy it.  No one's ever asked me for a jar of venom to go along with their honey at the farmers market.  :)

I made this post because I found a firm that wishes to buy venom, so I found market.
The firm has been active for 10 years, so I think it's pretty reliable. It offers 53 euro per 1 gram. I think it is a pretty good price, but I am not sure if I will be able to produce venom in "large" amounts.
They say it is possible to produce about 200 grams/20 hives/1 year.

I'm looking to see where I found that info on shocking it out of them.  I think it was in the ABC's & XYZ's of Bee Culture, but I'm not positive.  Does it need to be in liquid form or can it be dry?

Thank you for the warm welcome. Do not worry about the delay because it is not necessary. I noticed this is a very warm community the moment I entered, so no welcome is necessary.

As you wanted, here are some things about me:
I am a small beekeeper from Romania that started whit a small hive found in a tree. Now I have 40 hives, (ME with 10 frames), and I keep it this way, because my job doesn't allows me to keep more. I love forums with bees as the main subject, and this is why I came across yours.
Thank you for keeping this forum, and for reuniting bee-keepers across the globe.
