Are Yellow Jumpsuits Asking for Trouble?
« on: March 09, 2010, 04:34:56 pm »
Hi all--My first year (last year), I had no jump suit. Usually, my jean jacket and jeans did the job. But, on those very long sessions in the hives, the bees would eventually find the gaps.

So, our local surplus store has bright yellow jumpsuits for less than $5. Would this be asking for trouble? I know white is suggested for bee keeping, but how important is this?

Thanks in advance--luvin honey

They were attracted to my yellowish wedding ring, but they weren't out to do any harm, I have to wonder if they'll think you're a giant sunflower.

Just use whatever works.  I'd be all for the yellow jumpsuit.  I don't think the bees could care one way or the other!

I was wondering about looking like a nice source of pollen, too. :D Is it the nectar that they "see" ultravioletly? Or the pollen?

Well, $4 is worth a shot. I'll let you know how it works this summer.

I don't know.  I just won't feel comfortable working my hives looking like this.   :-D

Seriously, if it only cost $5 I'd give it a try.

you could always wash it in cold water and mild bleach and turn it whiteish....

That's cute :) And, yes, that is exactly the color! So, I would look like a major dweeb, but our nearest neighbors are 1/2 mile away and in-laws, so who cares?

In the Nova - Tales from the Hive video the beekeeper has a yellow suit.  I think it was filmed in Germany or Austria.

I wouldn't worry about the color of the suit as much as the scent it gives off. Bees behave aggressively towards scents they don't like.

Well, I guess it's easier poking fun than giving straight answers.

White is recommended because bees react more to colors as they darken. White the least, black the most.
Any light, pastel color will work fine. Any dark, deep colors may cause problems. I would second the idea of washing it in strong clorox water.

Iddee, you're right, I wasn't clear. I wasn't really making fun, but figuring there might be a few extra bees curious about the yellow color. - like my wedding ring, the scout just gave it a close look and went on her way. I would even figure that the perfect color would be the shade of red they can't see well.

JP, there ain't a bigger joker on this forum them me, but I do try to put a serious answer in with it when called for. It wasn't just one post, but 6 or 8 without a serious answer. Besides, I'm jealous over your weather, so I'm gonna give you a hard time until it warms up here.  :-P   :-P     :-*

Bee Happy, it is said that bees see red as black. It might backfire on you.

I still don't buy into the dark color thing as being necessarily a bee magnet as I wear khaki pants and black under armour shirts every day. Besides as you know I have dark black hair and a mostly black beard (My wife has added a bunch of gray!)

BTW, I have a teletubbie fetish.

I just love the teletubbies. The first time I saw them I just could not believe how funny the show was.

That was a cute segment JP. Thanks for sharing it.

I always thought that colored bee suits would be rather nice. Maybe I will dye mine a different color.

I don't know, Teletubbies kind of freak me out and give me the heebie jeebies.

Not really sure why.  Something about their faces . . .

I wonder if the saturation level of the color is more important than the actual hue.  As iddee and avenger said, bleaching it would bring down the saturation and maybe make it not so visible to the bees.  Hence, dark but faded clothes (like jeans and older black shirts . . and graying hair??  lol) may not attract them as much as deep dark new clothes.

I kinda like this idea, I might go looking for a jumpsuit myself!

love,
ziffa
