Building a Top Bar hive for northern climate
« on: February 12, 2014, 10:18:29 am »
I am planning  to build my hive.  My initial plan is to make the body out of 3/4 inch solid wood.  My question is would it be beneficial to use 1 1/2 solid wood for insulation factor?  My removable top not included.

Top bar and Langstroth hives together as one

As long as you do not mind the weight. You probably will not be moving it anyway. It would be closer to a natural hive in a tree. Let us know how it works out.

I would agree with Jim, and I have thought about making a Long hive with Langstroth frames and then puttting supers on top.  I have a TBH and I have only done it once, but if you aren't careful and you turn the bar over slightly wrong you comb can break off.
My TBH dose have frames but not Langs.  With the Langstroth frames you can interchange and can extract in an extractor.  Good luck

It really doesn't matter as long as the wind is off them.
Bees cluster to build heat for the queen and group not to heat the whole hive.
A thicker wood would make it slower to warm up when the sun shines.
